French Restaurants mentioned in Frasier

Postby domi_dot_com » Wed Nov 20, 2013 8:07 am

Ok this has to be done. I always thought there were just a few obvious French restaurants in Frasier and Niles' Seattle like "Le Cigare Volant" and "Chez Henri" but lately I've noticed there are quite a few others that are mentioned just once or twice.

To get the ball rolling I just heard "Le Cochon Noir" in the episode Retirement is Murder. :snorting:

I remember Niles mentioning "Le pied du cochon" in one of the Niles/Daphne episodes, maybe Taking Liberties.

Also "Petite Auberge" in that hated episode "Trophy Girlfriend".

There's "Quelque Chose" where they didn't end up going in Three Faces of Frasier.
I seem to remember something that sounded suspiciously like "Coeur de singe", but no idea what episode.
"Chez Henri", of course, in multiple episodes.
"Degas", where Frasier and Madeleine go in Adventures in Paradise.
And I have no idea how to spell the name of the restaurant where Roz goes in Roz, a Loan.

Yes, it was definitely "Coeur de singe" but I can't remember in which episode either.

I don't remember that they said the name of a restaurant in Roz a Loan, though

Don't they mention a Restaurant called "Chez Chez" in one episode?

Certainly something that sounds like that :). Though in the subtitles I have (which aren't always very accurate), they wrote it as "Chez Shea".

A reference to Shea stadium, in Cheers Diane says once that she wants to eat at chez "something" and Sam's response was that he'd rather eat at Shea stadium, meaning hot dogs and salted peanuts.

Anyway, that's where the "Shea" comes from.

I remember "chef Etienne" of course that was not a restaurant but a chef doing a house call so to speak. I believe it was the one in Daphne Does Dinner that we only see stomping out of Frasier's apartment very angry.

Could someone translate 'Le Cigar Volant' for me please? I have only primary school French to fall back on and that's a bit shaky. :)

It's "the flying cigar" for some reason :).

I am thinking that maybe they deliberately chose restaurant names that were improbable, I mean who would call his restaurant "the flying cigar" because they didn't want to involuntarily insult an existing restaurant and expose themselves to a lawsuit.

This is interesting from Wiki and probably explains the name "the flying cigar:

CIGAR (aviation)

CIGAR or CIGARS is a mnemonic that refers to a pre-takeoff checklist performed by general aviation pilots. The mnemonic stands for:[1]
Controls
Instruments
Gas
Airplane secure
Run-up.

Alternately:[2]
Controls
Instruments
Gas
Attitude
Run-up
One of the best things about watching Frasier is the rewind button!

"Flying cigar" used to refer to ufos, as people (in France) would often report seeing a "flying cigar" later they started seeing "flying saucers" (soucoupes volantes) probably influenced by American medias. So that's also a possible explanation for the name, but it's still strange as the term "flying cigar" is a bit old, (it was used mostly in the fifties)...
