My amazing 10 year old drum student. Link Fixed.

Postby Maple » Thu Jan 26, 2012 9:48 pm

Hello everyone.
Six years ago I began teaching a boy named Anastasios. It was obvious right from the first lesson that the lad was special. The really cool thing from my perspective is that he is also a lovely kid. I think the world of him.
.

If anyone cares to have a look, here he is sight reading a solo I transcribed especially for his rather large drumset. It only goes for 2 minutes.

Thanks.

Thanks for your patience everyone. The link should be okay now.

Here is another student of mine. He was the worlds youngest Fender endorsee. Unsure if that is still the case. The remarkable Yannick Koffi.

Thank you. :)

Young Yannick is something too. He recently played an invitational concert for the President of the Ivory coast. He has worked on Japanese TV, played stadiums in America and much more. He has been a professional musician since he was 8 years old. He's about 12 now. He was also featured on the cover of Life magazine in Africa. I am very proud of them both.

Thank you for your kind words.

Anastasios, Taso, was in for a lesson today. He showed me a solo he wrote dedicated to a guy named Buddy Rich, one of the greats. Taso's solo was beautiful.

I am full of pride right now. :D

The top 5 drummers are hard to define. Music is unlike a sport, where we can compare averages. Music, being art, is all about interpretation on the part of the listener.

I play drums and percussion. I am mainly experienced in Brasilian, African, Afro Cuban and Western 20th century percussion. Including drumset.

Great drummers are everywhere. Giovanni Hidalgo, Zaker Hussain, Chanquito, these are people unknown to the majority. Indeed even drumset players may not know them. And yet these people are giants of percussion.

So how to answsr this question? Frankly I don't know. I am too educated to answer. A teacher of mine, Virgil Donati, is perhaps the greatest technician thus far on the drumset. Buddy Rich, who I never met or studied with, was a monster and virtually untouchable as a soloist of his time. Quite possibly the greatest soloist on any instrument of the 20th century.

But we don't get hired to play solos.
Tony Williams was perhaps the greatest time keeper. Miles Davis said Tony was the best instrumentalist with whom he worked. Hard to argue with Miles, who also worked with Buddy.
Vinnie Colaiuta is astounding. Tremendoes technique, able to play any style. Something Buddy could not do. Buddy always swung. Buddy hired Earl Palmer to play on his daughters pop album.

There is no top 5. Anyone who says there is, is in need of an education.

I am sorry if this post is not informative. There are too many drummers.

My favorite drummer is Bill Bruford. Mainly due to the integrity with which he conducted his career.

hehe, fair enough. I think everyone has their own favourites lists for absolutely everything (haven't you seen or read High Fidelity :D ). It can only ever be from a personal limited perspective. It's only when people try to call their list 'the list' that you might as well give up with them.

My favourites include John Densmore, Nicko McBrain, Gregg Bissonette, Mike Portnoy and Mitch Mitchell (just to show my limited spectrum ;) ).

Virgil Donati's fantastic, though. I've heard him play for Steve Vai. Well impressed he was a teacher of yours.

Here is a list of 5 drumset players. Are they the best? I have no idea.

Drummers who are alive.
Jack DeJohnette.
Steve Gadd.
Vinnie Colaiuta.
Harvey Mason.
Tony Rosyster jnr.

Drummers no longer with us.
Buddy Rich.
Tony Williams.
Earl Palmer.
Art Blakey.
Joe Morello.

Of course I could add many, including Elvin Jones, Papa Jo Jones, Chick Webb, Gene Krupa, Ringo Starr, Philly Joe Jones, Ed Thigpen, Louis Bellson, Dennis Chambers, Jim Keltner, Terry Bozzio, Virgil Donati, Bernard Purdie, Roy Haynes.........

Thanks. Virgil was a great teacher. We used to do lessons in his bedroom at his parents house in Brunswick, Victoria. Not very glamourous.

I was teaching his concepts today.

These days I am an old pro. Having been a pro drummer since the early 80s. Everything Virgil taught me was good. He is a major influence and inspiration.

Mind you, he was just one teacher among many. Sunil DeSilva, Graham Morgan, Steve Smith, all have helped me. There have been many more.

I admire anyone in any musical field with the talent and dedication to play professionally. There are a couple of session musicians in my family and it can be tough (especially with some touring schedules) but certainly rewarding. I've played the guitar for 25 years, but was never good enough (practised enough) to look at it as any more than a hobby to relax with.

You got any clips on youtube or anywhere of you gigging?

No, there is a small reference to me on Wikipedia. I have removed all clips due to an issue with a stalker.

These days I am happy to be behind the scenes and unknown outside the community. People who hire guys like me know me.

The stalker incident freaked me out. I always turned down pop stardom. It was offered to me twice. Then I toured with some rock stars and lived through hell.

I used to own 20 plus years of gigs on video. I threw them all away. I regret it now, but not as much as to live that hell again.

I am just a musician. All I care about is music. These days I am an overweight 47 year old not in need of wider recognition. People who know me hire me. That is it.
Sometimes things appear on youtube, but they don't last. I am nobody.

Sorry to hear that. Sounds like a terrible experience to suffer.

My mother's cousin has been a reknowned saxophone player around the country since the 60s, but his son is a well known name in the music industry as a keyboard player, producer, composer and musical director for some big global names. Not heard of anything as bad as that from him, thankfully.

Yeah, it sucked. My feelings about it are so fragile I became afraid to post here! But she knows nothing of my love for Frasier. I am safe.
