Joe Keenan - Best Frasier Writer?

Postby Cake for Brains » Thu Oct 11, 2007 3:11 pm

This poll is pretty much the same as the one I started a while ago asking if Season 4 was the best Frasier season.

Simple question - is Joe Keenan the best writer on the Frasier staff? He's genuinely regarded, largely down to his farces, as the favourite scriptwriter on the show, so I thought it'd be interesting to see if the poll reflected this.

For two years now, I've championed Christopher Lloyd over him, but I've been watching a lot of 'Frasier' over the last month, after a spell of feeling very bored of it, and I've found myself finding Keenan's episodes even funnier now than I ever did. I've been watching them to go to sleep with every night, and I've found myself laughing out loud - which is a rarity for me. His farce episodes are amazing, but he also wrote all the best Bebe episodes and pretty much shaped her character.

So yep, I think he's the best writer on 'Frasier'. :)

It is close between he and Christopher Lloyd but yes.

Too, I would say Kelsey is the best Frasier director.

Yeah, I really like Joe Keenan and Chris Lloyd. I know that I really liked David Angell's scripts for Cheers.

Actually Kelsey did a really great job at directing. Him and James Burrows are probably my favorites.

I haven't voted yet because I can't decide if he is or isn't, though I am inclined to say he is. Actually, I talked myself into it, I am goin' to go with yes.
Wow, between school and basketball, when am I...going to be able to watch Frasier!!! Oh, don't worry I'll make time.

I used to think he was a bit overrated, but I've seen the light...

'The Ski Lodge' is now my favourite episode.

Pretty one-sided poll! :)

I wonder if Joe's reading this?

Yes! He understood the show and the characters so well.

Strangely, that's one episode of Frasier - along with 'Ham Radio' - that I consider a bit overrated!

I tend to agree. Both very, very good, but not in my very top episodes.

I would put The Ski Lodge ahead of Ham Radio but I'm not sure if either of them would be in my top 10. I'd have to think on that.

I was just checking to see who wrote my top 5 episodes and Joe Keenan actually only wrote one of them. (The Adventures of Bad Boy and Dirty Girl) Two of them are Ken Levine and David Isaac's episodes.

I was on course to hit the 'yes' button but I thought I would look up the writer for my favourite episodes in each season, just out of interest. Whilst Joe Keenan's name crops up a few times, he is by no means the one who appears the most.

So, on that (fair) basis I had to vote 'no'.

Rob Greenberg. What tipped it for me was that Joe was instrumental in the suckiness of season eight, plus he repeated himself twice.

Is that with 'The Matchmaker' and 'The Doctor is Out'?

Rob Greenberg's great, so no problems there.

''Out With Dad'' and TDIO, actually. I personally consider his second effort the difinitive Frasier farce so maybe his repeating was a good thing. He still turned the show to shit though...

How was Joe Keenan "instrumental in the suckiness of season eight"? He left with a story he thought a team of competent writers could figure out. You can't blame him for being so talented that his leaving had a dire affect on the show.

IMO, Rob Greenberg wrote about 3 really shit episodes and 3 average ones - that's far worse than Keenan's track record.
