The Rant Thread!!

Postby Mr Blue Sky » Tue Oct 09, 2007 3:43 pm

This is a thread dedicated for getting things off your chest that irritate or annoy you *suppresses natural instict to make a bra joke*.

Bloody US postal charges!!! It's so frustrating. I've just coughed up 12 quid in import tax for the S3 Boston Legal DVD on top of the 6 quid international postage charge which means I paid around 35 quid for something the retailer only asked £18 for! Grrr.

I've also been browsing PC games on Amazon and they sell ridiculously cheap in the US compared to here but I know with the postal charges and possible import tax whacked on top it will probably work out the same, even though we're being right royally ripped off in the UK.

It's things like this that make me wish I lived in the US - everything's so cheap!!

I agree, that's absolutely infuriating. I suggest using AxelMusic.com - it's a great retailer for American DVDs, and there's absolutely no risk of import tax, even for items over £18.

I've only had to pay the tax once, for SpongeBob S1 (), after that I found out about the stupid rules and became a lot more careful.

I've been lucky in my one experience of Customs charges. My box set of The Awful Truth was 'captured' by them 3 or 4 years ago and was stamped with an excess charge of around £12 when it was delivered. I'm assuming your supposed to hand over the extra on delivery? I guess the postman wasn't too bothered as i had the parcel through my letterbox and never heard any more about it ever again.

I usually watch for that £18 threshold now. I also try to deal with people who can mark anything worth more as below that level.

The stupid thing is that there's no way of organising Customs payment without the Royal Mail getting involved and having to add their 'administration fee' into the dealings.

Sucks to be you guys in the DVD department from every angle!

You have that stupid Regional DVD player thing that screws you over and when you manage to get a multi-region DVD player, you get screwed again by having to pay extra to region 1 DVD's shipped from the US.

Bummer!

My rant of the day has nothing to do with the postal service. (although we had none yesterday as it was National Columbus Came to an Already Inhabited Place and Claimed He Discovered It and Slaughtered All the Native Peoples Day). My rant has to do with STUPID PEOPLE!

Yesterday I talked to one of my stupid offenders and told him his days to report were the FIRST and THIRD Tuesday of the month. I have told him this at least 10 times previously AND I have given him at least 2 Reporting schedules with EVERY DAY HE IS TO REPORT on it! So I told him again that he is to see me next Tuesday.

30 minutes later he leaves me a voice mail message asking if he is supposed to report tomorrow (this was yesterday so he meant today!). I DID NOT call him back because he irritates the snot out of me and I want to harm him in many ways that would probably get me fired. He called me AGAIN this morning to ask when he was supposed to report!

AAARRRRGGGGGHHHHHHH!
This is the STUPIDEST day I've ever had!

You have a region as well - Region 1? I assume most players sold in the US are locked to R1 like ours are locked to R2? Its easy enough to buy a multi-region player though, which is probably the same over there.

We're certainly screwed when it comes to the price of many things though.

Well, yeah we have Region 1 players but most DVD's are released in Region 1 before they are released in other formats so it's easier for us to buy DVD's.

Yeah, AxelMusic are great. So are CD-Wow (but I don't use them as much as they don't make it clear whether they have an item in stock or not on their site).

Though continuing what Moon-Crane said, sometimes it's worth e-mailing sellers of the item on Amazon marketplace and asking if they state the true value on the front - many don't, and dodgy though it may be, it keeps the customs people off your back.

The biggest charge isn't really the import duty (17.5% of the item's value) though, it's the whopping £8(?) Royal Mail admin fee. :(

I used AxelMusic for the first time last week, based on your recommendation. Seemed easy to use, fairly cheao - just hope my DVD arrives safe and sound.

Oh, neat. :) Just don't kill me if something goes wrong - which I doubt it will. What did you buy?

Desperate Housewives S3. Er, also based on your recommendation. :)

It's been posted, so things seem to be going according to plan.

Ha, kind of proves my point about how great it is to be a US DVD purchaser that most US citizens don't realise their players are locked! TV shows and movies are released there first so there's no waiting on tenterhooks for the R1 release date! (unless you want something like Only Fools and Horses, and I suspect most Americans don't! )

I really enjoy seminars. I like the elemnt of discussion and boucning ideas around. I enjoy my American History seminar because Ian is sweet and good at explaining things and I enjoy my American Literature seminars because Tom teaches them and he is awesome and rambles about maypoles whilst wearing Ralph Lauren and reclining in a leather chair. (The fact that the students also get sit in big leather chairs is a noted factor of enjoyment as well).

However, today, there were two people (one in each seminar) who really cut my enjoyment off at the source. In my first seminar, there was a girl, F, who insisted on answering everything. She was one of those types - Excessive reading, excessive note taking, and yet always wanting the tutor to clairfy for her. In terms which only my friends will understand, she is a Connie. She answered so many questions today that it was not so much a seminar, as a conversation between her and Ian, whilst the rest of the room watched. The worst thing, however, is the fact that she is in my reading group. We have to meet up each week as a reading group to discuss a chapter in the textbook, so we bandied about which days are best for us. Fridays it seems are our best days, so what time did F suggest? 9 am. Yes, nine o'clock in the morning. I have a day off on Friday and I do NOT intend to wake up before nine to discuss a book for an hour, and I am certainly not having some study-happy bitch queen from hell dictate my mornings. Grr. She also has a horrid faux-posh affectation which makes me beg the question, why on Earth are you not living in Surrey, because I'm from South-East Hampshire, right near the border and we actually talk like that.

Anyway, the second person. Ah yes, the literature seminar. This guy, W, is like a male F, with his excessive notes/reading/question-asking etc. I honestly do not have a problem with an orgnaised student. What I do have a problem with, however, is a complete and obvious display of sycophancy. Stop sucking up to tutor, stop answering all the questions and please allow us to evoke a debate, because you can quote Franklin and explain the lightning theory all you want, but we are not interested. We came here to learn from a tutor of American Literature and would like to be able to have a discussion with him. It really annoyed me how he managed to effectively shut off a whole section of discussion by attempting to make it a conversation beteen him and Tom.

This was actually from yesterday, on my blog but hey, there's a rant thread now! Do I win longest rant?

Just heard some dropkick on James Whale's radio show going on about the evil of gay people, after having watched the Stephen Fry documentary - the scale of having missed the point is staggering  . Of course Whaley gave him short shrift and vented his spleen on the moron - especially when he started to quote the bible.

James Whale gets on my tits. I used to like him on TV in the late 80s but i caught his show the other day on talk sport and he got on my nerves so much I had to tune out after 5 minutes. I think they must deliberately give priority to the braindead callers who JW can easily 'outwit'.

May contain gratuitous use of the word tit

People who cram onto Tube trains where's there enough space for a louse to breathe annoy the tits off me. For example I manage to squeeze on where there's room on the Bakerloo but some tit gets on banging the head of this elderly fellow in the process. This poor fellow gets banged about all the way until Oxford Circus.
People who don't speak English and wonder why the bloody hell you're saying "excuse me" to get past. I said this on monday and got branded a titting racist by a classmate.
Man U, Chelsea and Arsenal...why? Alright you've won the Premiership and probably better than dear ol' Pompey but you're titting players are paid enough thatif all combined money they could realistically save Zimbabwe from economic destruction.
Wayne Rooney...an Aston Martin DB9 for his 21st birthday, oh why couldn't I have been a Premiership player!?
Man U fans. "Back to normal" one said after drubbing Wigan. Oh, yes that's because up until then you had scored only 7 goals and spent most of August down near the bottom. Diddoms, it must hurt knowing what Pompey went through for 3 years.
The French...
A German fellow (I like Germans but this one) who said that (during the term back in April) that our servicemen and woman being held by the Iranians should get what's coming to them for joining the navy and the war. I reminded him that they signed up not for the war and an argument ensued.
Commuters. I commute but there's always one who insists on having the freedom of the train. the one that edges you up against the window and produces a newspaper that a titting elephant could use for a blanket. Elbow knocking you even though he or she is leaning into the aisle.
Londoners. Well, it happens in Aylesbury too now but people who come at you and expect you to move. Sure, you have to some of the time but what if you're on the road and a bus is coming? Do they move? No
Women with pushchairs. Every one I encounter in the shopping centre or on Regent/Oxford st etc uses the pushchair as a weapon. I literally have jumped over two because there was little room for evasives.

Now, I need a drink but I have a lecture.

Tootles.
