Daphne: Early or Later

Postby Bee Gees Fan » Tue Jun 26, 2007 10:15 pm

Early Daphne - Season 1 - Season 7.

Later Daphne - Season 8 - 11.

I voted for Early Daphne.

Early, quirky seemingly more naive Daphne! (although not all THAT naive as we learn through various stories!) :D

Early Daphne, easily. She actually knew what fun meant in the early days.

Early, without a shadow of a doubt. She was fun, warm, lovable. In the later years she became a horrible, unlikeable, whining hag.

In the early days, she was a vital part of the show's charm. In the later years I wouldn't have cared if she hadn't been there at all.

I wish she'd left after Something Borrowed, Someone Blue. I really, really can't stand her after that, and she proved a huge barrier to DHP. Love early Daphne, really loathe later Daphne.

BA and Cakey: are there any episodes from seasons eight to eleven where you think Daphne did come across as likeable/sympathetic?

I'm with Cakey - I don't think there are, no! Even in the episodes where she's not being a moaning nag she comes across as being quite unlikeable!

I agree. I actually felt just as sorry for Niles when he was with Daphne than I did for him when he was married to Maris.

Not to mention that Daphne lost all charm and personality. I wanted more plots with Frasier and Niles, but instead DHP was subjected to crappy subplots featuring his boring, unfunny relationship with Daphne.

I didn't think Daphne was THAT bad in the later seasons. For me, she just lost that quirkiness.

And I also don't think Niles was quite as submissive with Daphne as he was with Maris or with Mel. Although he was still a weenie!

Niles' character also lost some of his edge after S7. While the "person" Niles would have been a better friend, the "character" Niles just was pretty dull and boring. He even got along better with Roz! (although he does have a good dig at Roz when Roz tells him about she and Frasier in No Sex Please, We're Skittish!)

I never found Daphne really unlikable though. (except in the one episode where she and Niles are teasing Roz mercilessly!).

Yes, that was one episode where I felt quite angry with Daphne.

It might just me, but Daph had some serious issues when you consider some of her outbursts and stories (Dad and his wooden stick or whatever it was). "No dogs in hell..." etc

Well, let's see........she has an alcoholic father who spent the majority of his time sitting in the pubs and an overbearing, annoying, irritating mother who wasn't exactly the warm and cuddly type and a boatload of brothers who ranged from raging drunks (Simon) to Billy who apparently had some of his OWN issues to deal with!

Yeah, I think Daphne probably had some things that needed working on!

Early all the way, later Daphne is just annoying. She loses all her kind heartedness

I voted for earlier, I like her looks and personality more in seasons 1-6.

I think so "The Wizard and Roz", for the test, and "Daphne Does Dinner" but I prefer Daphne early, for ever.[/i]

Early Daphne.

But think about it. Early Daphne was the single, still new to everything Daphne. Once she got with Donny for the first time she was in a series relationship then that continued with Niles. In a way she grew up but sort of lost her quirkiness along the way.

Anyone else notice how she lost the quirky accent. Later Daphne was Jane's real accent and not the Daphne accent

Yeah, occasionally she remembered she was supposed to be from Manchester. I love the fact that she asked John Mahoney for tips!

... and I haven't voted yet, but I pick early Daphne too. Much quirkier, more interesting. :)

Early Daphne for sure. While she way overdid the accent in the early seasons, she just got mean over the years, and in the final season I simply cannot abide her presence on the show. She aged considerably during the last couple of seasons as well.
