Early Niles or Later Niles

Postby Bee Gees Fan » Wed Jun 20, 2007 11:34 pm

MC mentioned in another thread that Niles could be kind and caring in the later seasons, so I wondered who people preferred - the early Niles or the later Niles. By early, I mean the Niles from Seasons 1-4 and later Niles is from Seasons 5-11.

I think I slightly prefer later Niles.

I voted for Early Niles because I like Unrequited Love Niles better than Relationship Niles!

Early Niles is funnier to watch, but I'd rather be around later Niles as I'd find myself less likely to smack him round the face. Later Niles seems more accessible to a broader range of people. Put it this way, even Roz enjoys being around him in the later seasons.

I do agree DHP. If I were to be around one of them, I'd prefer Later Niles as he was a bit less pretentious and less judgmental. But character-wise, I much preferred Early Niles.

For the show's sake, early Niles all the way. Very funny.

Yep, later Niles may have been more accessible and less poncy, but early Niles was vastly more interesting and funny as a character!

Wow, Early Niles is popular!

I agree that Early Niles was funnier. When I voted, I don't think I was considering it in terms of the show, but thinking of which personality I would prefer.

Early Niles, by far.
But I agree, late Niles would be easier to live with!

Certainly early Niles. The whole Daphne and Niles together thing doesn't really work for me, so I much prefer the unrequited love. And early Niles is funnier (but that might just be because the scripts were better early on).

Early Niles had Maris to contend with, a woman who sniffs her coffee or inhales it rather and then hands it back considering it done and dusted (Secret Admirer)

Early Niles was funnier because we had the whole Daphne thing going on. And we had Horny Niles not gettin' any! Lusting after Daphne and listening to her sex stories.

It was really hard for him to be written funny when that entire element was gone.

Yes, discomfort always allows or more interesting comic opportunities than contentment.

Yeah - allowing a character to become content can be suicide!

Early Niles. No question.

When Daphne got together with him, one of the Top 5 comedy characters of all-time became a boring, bland and very generic sitcom character. It's really quite shocking to compare the two really.

Later Niles has well and truly been flattened!

It looks as though many people are considering this from the comedy perspective, though. Maybe if I started a poll asking which Niles people found more likeable, the results would be a bit different? I think I might do that.
