Fan Dividers - "Frasier's Edge"

Postby Mr Blue Sky » Mon Jun 18, 2007 8:09 am

This is an odd episode. The pedigree of this episode's co-authors is beyond question (Jon Sherman + Dan O'Shannon) but it has a really flat feel in my opinion.

For a long time I rated this as the worst ever episode of Frasier, simply because when it aired I thought "What the hell has happened to the funniest show on TV?"

I've seen it a few more times since buying the S8 DVD and while I no longer consider this episode the worst, I certainly think it sums up the season 8-10 O'Shannon years very succinctly - thoughtful, but pretty humourless.

For that reason, I'm voting "I DON'T like it!"

I really, really dislike this episode, definitely one of the worst for me. Kelsey gives a good performance, but there are no laughs to be had at all and the whole plot just seemed uncessary really. Plus, just as Frasier seemingly has some sort of breakdown at the SeaBee's at the end, the subject matter is never referred to again. Martin constantly reminding Niles that he was proud of him too was pathetic and unfunny as well.

I don't like this one. It's reasonable at times but there's not enough comedy.

I can see why they wanted to explore Frasier's character a bit more and try and explain why he acts the way he does. For me it was unsuccessful though. If you're going to spend 22 minutes of a situation comedy attempting something so serious it had better be pretty damn good. Frasier's Edge sadly, wasn't.

I've said this many, many times before, but Don Juan In Hell Part 2 covered this ground in a more believable way, and managed to be extremely funny in the process!

should have been better. It's not the worst by a long shot - rather it's too serious on its own. It needed a strong comedy subplot to break it up a little.

However, I always wished they had taken the same sort of approach with Martin's story in A Day In May, so i'm maybe a bit hypocritical. i'll vote like, as i can sit and watch it ok enough, but with reservations.

What does a Geordie accent sound like? Is it nice?

I would have liked to have seen a more in depth version of Martin's story from A Day in May as well. As it is, that segment really brings that whole episode down for me because it could have been done well. Maybe a combination of Martin's segment in A Day in May and The Return of Martin Crane. That might have worked out quite well. With a good subplot.

As for Frasier's Edge though, I'm really not even sure how it could have been better. Perhaps, as has been mentioned a funny subplot in there would have helped but the whole episode just lacked in everything!

Not the worst but I rank it lower than many. Including War of the Words, A Day in May, (which I actually like if you take out the Martin segment) Deathtrap and Some Assembly Required!

You're bound to have heard them. Do you watch Big Brother - the voice-over guy has one, of sorts. Or Ant & Dec.

I've seen bits of Big Brother, but I don't watch it. I didn't like the voice-over guy's accent much, unfortunately. I quite like Dec's, though.

So, how attractive is your voice? If I were to hear it, would I swoon on the spot? :)

I wouldn't worry, from the times i've heard him, the Big Brother guy sounds very annoying - it's obviously exaggerated - if not completely fake.

I'd imagine it would be the type of things i'd say, rather than the sound of the voice saying them, that would be aimed at making you swoon

Accents are pretty interesting though. I think the UK has the most diversity? i may be wrong.

Hey you two..........take this conversation to the Sex Thread and leave this one for the discussion of what a crap episode Frasier's Edge is!

MC: Do you think an episode such as I suggested (Martin's A Day in May and The Return of Martin Crane combination) would have possibly worked?

I always wished they would have gone into deeper detail about Martin's shooting.
