Which do you prefer, and why? No namby-pamby 'I don't mind either' answers allowed!

I have both a Mac and a PC at work, which one I use depends on the subject that the particular student I'm with is studying. If I had to pick one or the other, I'd choose the PC. The Mac seems to me to be more about style than substance.

When I recommend equipment for students, the Art students usually ask for a Mac. What makes me laugh, though, is that nine out of ten times, they'll ask either for a dual boot PC, or Parallels software, so that they can run PC programs. They'd probably be better off just having a PC, as Photoshop is pretty much identical on both machines, and Corel Paintshop Pro is a PC-only program. Macs look sleeker, though, and that's important to many people.

As I understand it, Macs have much less chance of getting a virus simply because less viruses are written for Macs. The security issues exist on both machines, but less virus writers use Macs, and as their aim is to reach as many people as possible, they would be cutting down their target audience. But given the choice, a PC would win out for me every time.

Finally, in my Mac Vs. PC argument - Apple piss me off, with their 'exclusivity' approach - e.g. iPod users have to use iTunes, because you can't drag and drop tracks on to an iPod like you can with every other MP3 Player - the tracks have to be converted into a different format. Microsoft aren't my favourite company either, but at least they do provide tools that make it easier for other companies to make compatible software.

I'm a PC.

It's what I've always had and it's what most of my friends have and it's what most of my IT Geek friends can fix give me free software for!

I'm going with PCs. It's what I've been accustomed to for as long as I can remember and I doubt I could adjust to anything different. While Macs certainly look pretty, that's the only advantage I can see at the moment. The argument for Macs I primarily see are that they fail less often than PCs. I've never had any problems with my laptop, which has had both Vista and Windows 7. All you have to do is take good care of them.

I've never used a Mac. So for that reason I'm going with PCs.

for what I do PC, my brother is a Mac obsessive, he just goes on the internet and iTunes, I do that and upload photos, his laptop £1000, mine £350, it's stupid. The only other person I know who has a Mac is Harland, and he uses it for making films for his degree

Oh yeah, that's the other thing I forgot to mention, the ridiculous price. Don't see what the Mac does that PCs can't to be honest. Not to mention its highly limited game library brings it way down.

Hehe, i wanna be namby-pamby about it, goddammit! If you can afford both, i'd get both. If you need to seriously use computers for business and make yourself exclusive to one over the other then you're holding yourself back. If i was editing professional films and special effects all day i'd prefer the Mac. If i needed to build and render complex 3D work, then i'd have to go with PC. If i was after an off-the-shelf machine to just switch on do basic, everyday, tasks i'd probably go Mac. If i was a serious gamer and needed to custom build boxes, overclock the cpu, etc, it has to be PC.

I'm put off by the same Apple restrictions as you, DG, but then it helps with stability when you don't have to cater for anything and everything that's chucked at the machine. And the security is fundamentally better from the ground up on Macs, as their unix based root is less prone to being fatally affected by viruses. It's not just that there are less viruses written for the Mac, although that does help in terms of any user-triggered viruses rather than self-extracting ones.

I guess if i had a gun to my head i'd go PC for the versatility and greater freedom.

The biggest reason I love my Mac is the way the OS is laid out. It's so much easier to use and to find things. Also, the way all of the apps work in conjunction is very, very helpful. For example, the way the mail client automatically detects events in the text of an email and makes 1-click entries in iCal, detects personal information and makes 1-click entries in Address Book, etc. I do have Windows XP on an HD partition to play all the Windows games I have, and they all run beautifully.

You can get suites of apps that do any of that stuff, but you're right about it just working out of the box. That's because it's easier for the Apple to integrate everything as nobody cries foul over monopoly tactics like they do when Microsoft try to integrate anything into Windows. They can't even bundle Internet Explorer without everyone kicking off, while nobody gives a shit about Macs shipping with Safari.

The problem with the games side is that a Mac won't really run the serious top end games that full-on/pro-Gamers go for (partly because they're primarily PC-written, but also because the maxed out and overclocked hardware specs are above even the off-the shelf top-end Mac), and it's much more difficult to keep up by swapping out new hardware and customising your Mac for the maximum output (even the G5's not built to be re-tweaked, so has little room to customise).

You'd get completely cuffed playing a newtwork game of CoD or whatever on the best G5 Mac against a custom gaming PC. It's a specialist thing, though, so not something your average user is going to worry about.

Not necessarily. The thing is, while designed on a PC, Modern Warfare 2 was designed for a console, so unless you just have to run it at 1920x1080 with 16xAA with all the graphics options maxed you should be able run the game at a perfectly playable framerate. Multiplayer is a little broken by PC standards anyway what with Infinity Ward's decision to dissallow dedicated servers.

Really? Bit of a disappointment to hear that. Hope that's not the general trend with the top games?

It's absolutely the trend, MW2 is a console game. We won't see the next big jump until DX11 hits for real. I believe Dirt 2 supports it, and the next Stalker is set to be its first posterchild; Crysis 2 is when we'll see the gap become apparent.
