Best Sitcom Tournament (The Results!)

Postby Tom M » Fri Apr 10, 2009 9:12 am

This is just an idea I got last night which I thought would be pretty cool to do. Basically, I think we all agree that Frasier is one of the best sitcoms ever made, but what about the others? That's what this tournament is going to decide!

Each person can nominate five sitcoms they think are worthy of being crowned "Best Sitcom, Minus Frasier"! After a lot are in the running, I'll put two up in a "match" and forum users simply vote for whichever they prefer. After that'll come quater finals, semi finals and then the final!

So, nominate five sitcoms now! I'll keep the nominations open until around 5pm the day after the forum comes back online after the dreaded migration!

Anyway, here are my nominations:

--> Seinfeld
--> King of the Hill
--> Everybody Loves Raymond
--> The Office (US)
--> The King of Queens

:)

Thanks Wes, but King and Seinfeld have already been nominated, so you may as well nominate another 2. :)

Third Rock from the Sun.
All the others I'd nominate have already been said. There's not a lot of point me nominating my favourite sitcom, Reggie Perrin, because I doubt that anyone outside of Britain, or most people in Britain who are under the age of 30, will have heard of it! :lol:

EDIT: Oh, hang on. Thought of another one - Becker.

Same reason i can't see any point mentioning Whatever Happened To The Likely Lads, The New Statesman, Drop The Dead Donkey, etc.

I suppose Blackadder could be chucked in. Maybe The Office (UK) - just to let people bore each other with arguments, and certainly Curb Your Enthusiasm should be there. I'm sure i can already see how it will go, though.

I originally had Operation Good Guys in my list but that wouldn't get a look in (apart from by me).

Did anyone mention Auf...Pet yet??

Thanks for the nominations, everyone! I think part of the fun of this is seeing how two shows do when going against each other, rather than the absolute final result (and the subsequent arguements ;)).

Round 1 will kick off tomorrow, around 5pm BST.

Ooh yeah, 'Drop the Dead Donkey' - how could I forget that? I'd vote for that over most of the others that have been mentioned so far.

Auf...Pet and OFAH will always have a special place in my heart, as they are responsible for forging a bond between a daddy and his daughter. :)

Yeah that's true.

I reckon more non-Americans are going to have seen US shows than Americans have seen sitcoms from other nations - so it'll likely be easier to talk to those. So, can i also chuck in Two Guys A Girl And A Pizza Place just to see how many people here actually watched it! A little underrated gem, imho (although i'm sure it had very good ratings at its peak). And, even though it's not really one of my favourites, i'll throwRoseanne in there, seeing as i don't see it in the list so far.

Tom, how are you going to decide which two shows go up against one another? Are you going to do them alphabetically, or something?

Right everyone, in the run up to event 1 (and in the light of everyone nominating more than 5 ;) ), feel free to add in as many new nominations as you want!

There's 47 up there at the moment, so let's try and get it to 64, so it's a nice round number that keeps divinding easily in 2!

Goodnight Sweetheart.
Black Books.

It's going to be a US sitcom that wins though, because more people will have seen them.
