How Many DVD (Discs) Do You Own?

Postby Mr Blue Sky » Mon Feb 23, 2009 10:46 pm

I just wondered how many DVD discs people here own. I do have a good reason for asking this. I want to try and work out how much space the average DVD collector would need if all these discs were transferred to a hard drive (when calculating the 'average', I may have to exclude Wez from that calculation for obvious reasons ).

I'd appreciate exact numbers of discs, but if not, just give an estimation using the poll.

Cheers! :)

Yeah, so if you have The Sopranos box set that would be about 35 discs I expect.

Come to think of it, the options I've given are shit. Loads will have 500+. I'll change them.

I think the options I've given are still going to be shit. We'll see how it goes.

If you can't be arsed to work it out exactly, no worries, just give your best estimate. :)

I went with 800-900.

It might not be that many though because I don't own very many "complete" sets of TV shows. Off hand I can think of 7 complete sets.

I can probably give you actual number when I get home in a few hours.

Cheers everyone!

I'm still waiting to Wez to weigh in with his total - he's going to make us all look like rank amateurs!

So far I think Cat has the most with around 800 discs - that translates to around three and a half terrabytes of data.

I'm trying to work out exactly how much space I'd need if I were to use my PC to store all my DVDs on. Obviously I'd want to keep my downloaded shows on there too so in order to be 'future proof' I wanted to see what space the average DVD collection takes up.

I overestimated a little bit.

I have a total of 691 actual discs. Well, 690 as I just realized that when my friend returned Dogma the actual disc with the movie on it wasn't in the case!

Ok Wez, you're the maths genius, how much data does that translate to? 4.36GB a disc, I think.

Quick calculation suggests about 9 terabytes, I think!

Haha, that's insane!

I'm thinking I'll only need 5TB max, even taking into account the massive amount of downloading I do.

Yeah, I'm a special case. :D 5TB sounds a pretty good amount to me.

In truth, I don't think I'll ever own as many DVDs as Cat, never mind you Wes. Your total has helped me find the average though, so thanks for that.

I downloaded about 750GB in the whole of last year, so it should be fair to say 5TB will last me for a few years until I decide to upgrade the time after this.

Thanks to everyone who's taken the time to work this out so far!

I would guesstimate (fuck, I hate that word) between 700-800 discs for me.

Couldn't tell you how many regular DVD discs i've got, as they're mostly boxed up and packed away. I can't think of more than a couple or three hundred off the top of my head though. I do have about 1Tb of external hard drive space and another couple of hundred DVDs filled with divx format tv and film.

5Tb should be easily enough for now, but bear in mind you need to double up each estimate if you want to have a backup copy of everything against disk failure. (I'm sure writing the most important ones to DVD will be enough - most stuff you're unlikely to be too arsed if you lost it)
