Monty Python: love it or hate it?

Postby Dorset Girl » Sat Jun 28, 2008 10:53 am

After our discussion on the TV thread...

I voted 'love it'!

EDIT: Dammit, I meant to add a 'haven't seen it' option - how do I add new ones now?

Edit: Like that. - BS

From the TV thread...

 In all seriousness, although I love it, I can see why people wouldn't, it's a very surreal type of humour that definitely wouldn't appeal to everyone. :)

The thing is, I do like surreal humour, just not MP - I find it incredibly dated.

Dated in terms of viewing it now, in 2008, or dated for the time it was made?

Absolutely love them. Those sketches you mentioned on the TV thread DG, are classics indeed. Just thinking of them now makes me laugh

Dated in terms of when I first remember seeing it and "understanding" it, aged about 13/14.

I don't like The Goons either.

Fair enough. Like I said on the TV thread, I can see why people wouldn't like it. My mum hates it - she just doesn't find it funny at all. My dad, on the other hand, loves it!

EDIT: I've never seen The Goons. Is Spike Milligan part of that? I could never stand him!

We agree on something then! I tried to read his version of 'Wuthering Heights' and it just made me cringe and want to throw it at the wall.

I absolutely ADORE The Two Ronnies but there's one 'sketch' I've never enjoyed - The Phantom Raspberry Blower. Turns out SM co-wrote it!

We agree on that too then! I hated TPRB, it made no sense whatsoever. In general, I love The Two Ronnies.

All this agreeing is making me feel giddy and lightheaded, DG - can you start listening to some music so we can go back to 'normal'!!!

The TR musical finales were always a fave of mine, especially The Plumstead Ladies Male Voice Choir and The St Batolph's Country Dance Team!!

PS - Also liked 'Swedish Made Simple' (F.U.N.E.X??)

Well, that's all right, we can disagree again - because although the musical finales were quite funny, they definitely weren't my favourites.

Favourites that come to mind are the 'fork handles' sketch (predictable I know, but I really do think that's the funniest few moments of TV ever!), the heiroglyphics, the two old men / tramps and pretty much any sketch where Ronnie B uses his amazing ability to play with words! I love 'Swedish made simple' as well!

'News At Ton' (where something's wrong with the newsroom typewriter keys) is incredibly clever and very funny!

PS - F.U.N.E.M.??

PPS - D'you like Morecombe and Wise?? (If the answer's 'No', don't let MM see it!)

 That was your plan all along, wasn't it - to hijack the thread?! ;)

I do prefer the Two Ronnies to Monty Python, actually, although it's kind of hard to compare them as they're so different. I think I've written on another thread somewhere about why I don't really like Ronnie Corbett though. :?
