Why do so many people have so many credit cards? I use one as a mere payment system. If i can't pay in cash or the slimmest of credit extension, then I don't buy.

Because they offer different things and have accumulated by taking out handy offers at the time. One is a business credit card, the others are Mastercard, Visa and AmEx and offer discounts and cashback options if used in certain stores. One still has 11 months interest free left on it in case of emergencies. I don't carry around a lot of cash and CC's are more secure protection for buying goods than a debit card or paying cash anyway. Doesn't cost me anything to have any of them and they cover the bases.
