Is cooking an art form?

What do you think?

I'd say yes. I've only recently realised just how creative one can be with food. It's not artistic in the same way as painting, writing and acting, but I still think it can be considered an art form, both in preparation, presentation and the combination of different foods.

No, I think you spoil food with too much ponsing aba't.
I love Lobster Thermadore, but I also adore Beans on Toast. Food should be simple - keep it that way.

Cooking's like painting: anyone can do it, but the people who can do it well and create amazing things make it something a bit more special than the muppet who throws things together and hopes for the best.

By the way, my chef skills currently fall into the latter category. :D

I'd lean towards yes.

I would also say yes.

And like painting, I can't do it!

I'd say it pretty much is, because 'grading' what's good or bad can end up being fairly subjective.

Oh, it's definitely an art form. It's seriousness is worthy of "O Henry, or O Henri".

I voted 'no'.

Along with breathing, for me, eating falls into the catagory of 'stuff one must do to stay alive' Basic human survival. There's nothing remotely arty about it for me.

That's not to say that people can't be excellent cooks, and I do enjoy a nice meal. But it's either nice food or not nice, not a work of art one way or the other.

Old thread, but I'll say yes. I think you need an artictic mind to be able to combine flavours expertly, and that's something people are born with. There's also the beautiful plated you see coming out of pro kitchens that're stunning to look at and, I whilst I agree that they are sometimes too much, I think they look very good and the chef should be complimanted for his/her presentation.

When you are young it is just fuel.
As you get older you enjoy the creative side so much more.
If you can create fine dishes and they are enjoyed and appreciated then I vote yes to the above.

depends on what is being cooked and for what situation, also the person doing it helps, I can knock up a decent meal, but no-one could call it artful

All I know is that by the time I'm done putting the ingredients together for a meal, the kitchen looks like an Andy Warhol painting.

Does that count?

Yeah. With my difficulties with cooking, it's definitely an art form.

I boil a wicked salad.

In doing so it turns from one set of textures into another.
So my cooking is art.
