Console War - Generation 2

Postby DHP » Wed Apr 25, 2007 4:05 pm

Here's a great debate from the 90s...

Which console is better and why? Was it Super Mario World that did it for you or Sonic the Hedgehog 2? Were you into Super Mario Kart or... whatever Sega had as their equivalent. :D Which console did you prefer the look of? Which controller was better for gaming? Let the debate be resurrected!

Mega Driver for me. I loved all those fantastic Sonic games. I used to spend whole summer holiday's trying, and failing, to complete them.

However, looking at the bigger pciture, I prefer Mario to Sonic, but that's mianly because of the Mario Kart/Mario Party games on the Gamecube.

SNES for me. Used to love playing Mario Kart and Killer Instinct with my mates. It's a shame Killer Instinct Gold bombed on the N64, as I'd have liked to have seen that franchise on the current generation of consoles.

Mega Drive for me.

I prefer the graphics, it didn't try as hard to be fancy like the SNES eg. Killer Instinct (fantastic game). I generally think the games were stronger, Sonic kicks Mario's ass, IMO. The EA Sports Series also rocked hard, can't remember if there was an EA series on SNES, though. I also prefer the meatier control pads, the all-black look worked for me too.

Btw, you can get a hold of all these classics right now if you know where to look. It's not legal, but I've spent many hours playing the classics, for free, courtesy of the internet right here on my pc. Here's how... Hopefully that's enough. I'll guide anyone through it if they're interested.

Btw, BEST POLL EVER!!!

Mega drive

(as for polls, I was debating a new Bond one and Star Wars but I don't know.)

Aren't there already polls for favourite films in those franchises?

I just realised I forgot to include options for 'both' or 'neither', but that's ok as I'm sure there's a law somewhere that states that you have to like one over the other. :D

Not for Bond women and Star Wars characters

That is a shame! You missed a classic console IMHO. The Megadrive by a long way for me. I hated the SNES.

That's my favourite console, bar none. You can't beat a bit of Crash Bandicoot and Spyro.

Well, we could have a poll for the generation of consoles which followed this one, namely the N64, PS1 and Dreamcast.

Absolutely! Crash team racing, Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 2, Gran Turismo and Crash Bandicoot 3 are among my all-time favourite games.

So I'm not the only one.. :) Spyro is a classic game and I still play it quite a lot of the time, same with Crash.

Tony Hawk's a classic (even though I hate skating!) and GT is the ultimate car racing game ever made. Also the GTA series is one of the best for detail and production quality.

The SNES by a mile. Link to the Past? Super Mario World? Super Mario Kart? Yoshi's Island? The Megadrive didn't have anything to touch those.

Yep. Until Ocarina of Time came out, Link to the Past was regarded as the finest game ever I believe. Fantastic game, never played it on the SNES, but got it on the Game Boy Advance. Loved it to bits, along with the SNES Mario Kart. I'd have loved to have played Yoshi's Island. I heard nothing but great things about it, and the original Super Mario World was a fantastic game. Kinda wish I'd got it on the GBA. Ah well, nevermind.

SNES, they always seemed to have the better games. At least, that's my recollection. I remember playing Super Star Wars and all of those things a lot. I did prefer Sonic to the Mario Bros., though and had a Game Gear. Good times!

Yoshi's Island is just a beautiful game - not only in terms of graphics (and even now I think the art design on the game is striking), but also the way it's structured, the level design, everything. It's amazing!

SNES mainly for Super Mario World. They were pretty much of a muchness though.

I seem to recall owning one of the FIFA games on my SNES, so they must have had the EA Sports games, Stratman.
