Riddles

Postby DHP » Mon Apr 02, 2007 11:38 pm

I thought this might be fun for those of us who enjoy mind-games. The idea is that we take turns in working through riddles. Whoever gets the solution of the current riddle gets to set the next one. If no-one gets it and everyone gives up, the person who set that one gets to set the next, or can allow someone else to if they want. People can ask any questions they want to help them get the solution.

Here's one to get you all going.

I have 2 coins in my pocket which when added together make 11 pence. One of the coins is not 10 pence. What are the coins?

Wouldn't add up to 11p, so no.

Thought it was the old 1+1=11 trick.

Is the other coin a 10p then?

Well done. :D That one normally takes people quite a while. Either it's easier to spot the solution when it's written down, or you're just more intelligent. Pick whichever one you like best. Well, down to you me123...

Yay! Here's one:

I know a word of three letters three, add two, and fewer there will be.

Can I just check, there were no typos in there?

Okay, a bit of a long shot, but is the word supposed to be "three"?

I was thinking me123 might have meant to write, "I know a word of letters three", which could mean the word has three letters, or could mean that the word is three. If you add two, that makes five - which is a word that has fewer letters in it.

I'm probably completely wrong. I'm usually not very good at riddles.

Yes, it's a typo, now : "I know of a word with letters three".

Nope, it's not Three BGF :( Although it was very good; I didn't think of that!

A police officer saw a truck driver clearly going the wrong way down a one-way street, but did not try to stop him. Why not?

Yay! My go?

If a clock takes six seconds to strike six times at six o'clock, how many seconds will it take to strike eleven times at eleven o'clock?

6 strikes = 5 "gaps"
6 seconds = 5 "gaps"

Each gap is 1.2 seconds

11 strikes = 10 "gaps"

10*1.2 = 12

12 seconds?

Sorry, but here's one I wanted to throw out there before it slips my mind. Feel free to ignore it until me123's has been solved.

If it takes a man 2.4 weeks to dig a hole, how long will it take the same man to dig half a hole?

is it 18011 seconds?

Edit: just to validate my massively wrong answer - i was taking it as the length of time that would pass to do reach the time and do it from the same point as the 6 strikes starting point.

You'd be suprised at how many intelligent people that catches out (not saying you're not intetlligent, you know what I mean). Especially if say "the SAME man...."
