Red Dwarf is great - at least it was until series 7. It would definitely be in my top ten!

Yeah, Series 8 was terrible, they should have just ended. I find it too cringeworthy to watch.

Have you ever seen all of the S8 episodes? I haven't, I watched about three and gave up. Before that though, I was a really big fan (e.g. knew every word in Polymorph 1 )!

I think I watched about 2 or 3. Reintroducing the entire RD crew was a HUGE mistake, as was the return of Kochanski

Yep, I agree, especially about Kochanski. Maybe it would have worked better if it had still been Clare Grogan, I don't know. :(

I'd have thought so. Grogan was the perfect Kochanski IMO.

I agree with that. I'd still like to see a reunion show, or possibly a film? The way it was left it steep decline left a bad taste in my mouth. Get Rob Grant back in the fold and make the movie!

Has anyone read the RD books?

'Infinity Welcomes Careful Drivers' and 'Better than Life' were both excellent.

'The Last Human' and 'Backwards' were both good, but I didn't think they were up to the standard of the first two. I think Grant and Naylor work much better together than separately, it's a shame they didn't continue to write together.

I'd be up for a movie - although i wonder if it may have that 'slick' look that ended up marring the series, imo.

The fact that they improved special effects etc ruined RD for good. If they made a film, I doubt they would go back to the lame effects used back in the early series, which is a shame as that was one of the things that made it a bit of a cult classic.

Read 'Infinity Welcomes Careful Drivers' and also have the tape of Chris Barrie reading it - excellent!

Also read 'The Last Human' also excellent.

Also good was 'The Man in the Rubber Mask' by Robert Llewellyn, very funny!

Oh and I left it at Season 6. Great end. Have seasons 1-6 on video and Smeg Ups and Smeg Outs.

Watched a few of season 7 and was too horrified to continue. It ended at 6 for me.

Jimmy. Really? It's like Brazil?
Reggie: No, no - I was in Brazil, not Peru.
Jimmy: Sorry, memory like a sieve, could've sworn Tom said Peru.
Reggie: No, Tom said 'the Argentine', but it was Brazil.
Jimmy: Oh - so what's it like in Brazil in the winter?
Reggie: Chile.

It's funnier if you watch it!

Heh, that's great. I have the box-set of Reggie Perrin still to watch, actually. I have very strong memories of it from my childhood. To this day, I can't see a hippo without thinking of his mother-in-law.

I'm with you. Everything after S6 is just imaginary - like the 'dream season' in Dallas.

Yeah, it ends for me with Starbug blowing up at the end of 'Out of Time', as well. Season 7 is bad, and season 8 is even worse.

How many did they make in the end?

What's the episode where Lister's playing pool with the planets? Is that White Hole? Argh I must get my videos out of storage!

They made 52 episodes. I always enjoyed S7 & S8, not on the same level as S1-S6 of course, but I thought the series finale was atrocious. A really embarassing end to the series.

Maybe one sitcom that never fails to make me laugh, if not continiously [sic] is the aforementioned Phil Silvers Show, popularly known as Bilko.

As Paul says, 52 episodes over 8 series. I just discount the final 16, I don't think I'll ever watch them again. So it ends on episode 36 for me! :P

Yep, that's 'White Hole' - excellent episode! I've been watching them again recently - series four is tops.

Have you read that bit in the book ("Better than life" I think)? It's quite different to how it is in the episode White Hole. :)

The show only had a shelf-life of 36 episodes!? Jeez, The Simpsons have at least twice that many stone cold classics...

Yeah, but look at Fawlty Towers - considered a British classic and had only 12 episodes. I think that's why I am now bored of it though!

Actually, there was only one episode repeated eleven times. Most overrated comedy in history, IMO.

It really is time for a change, the BBC have a decent budget now, a writers room is a must and 24 episodes a season is more than possible. And don't say RD tried it and failed, the problem will have been the writers were not used to the trick writers room dynamic.
