Maris, Mel or Daphne

Out of Niles' three main loves, which did you prefer?

I'm voting for Maris, because although I like Daphne, I loved hearing the stories about Maris.

I went with Maris because I liked Niles character the best when he was with Maris.

Daphne. Purely out of the fact I have come to dislike the first two.

Yes, he's better with Maris but well...Daphne was not nearly as insufferable as Maris and Mel.

I despised Mel.

I may feel differently about Maris had we ever actually met her but somehow, I just don't have a lot of ill feelings toward her poor tortured little soul! (although she was pretty shitty to Niles)

I'm really not sure which to pick out of Maris and Daphne. I loved hearing the weird little snippets of information about Maris, so I think I'm going to have to go with her.

When Niles and Daphne finally got together, it didn't seem to work as well as I thought it would.

Totally agree there Rudy. Mel was just awful.

I assume that's what the writers intended us to think - then we could be happy for Niles and Daphne instead of feeling sorry for Mel?

Possibly but since I'm not a huge Niles/Daphne fan, feeling "sorry" for Mel vs. being happy for Niles and Daphne never really entered my mind. She just made me think that Niles once again was in a henpecked relationship with some snotty little bitch! I felt sorry for him! (but not because I wanted him with Daphne). Of course, he was in a henpecked relationship with Daphne too but that was different! At least Daphne wasn't a stuck up bee-yotch!

It could only be Maris, really!

Mel was fine but nothing special, and Daphne, well, I couldn't stand her by the time she got together with Niles.

Wow this does suprise me. I'm going to stick up for Daphne here but I haven't seen a lot of the later episodes. What I have seen I still liked her in them though.

BN has some thoughts about this, I believe.

For me, it's a tie between Maris and Daphne, as Mel's character wasn't as significant or memorable during the whole 11 seasons.

Maris and her relationship with Niles did yield a lot of great comedy, and let's not forget some of the strong dramatic moments in seasons 2-4 in particular that resulted from that relationship.

I want for Daphne though, as I think everyone loved the flirtation in seasons 1-7, and as an idealistic romantic, I loved the ending of season 9 and the start of season 10.

It's not so much that I dislike Daphne later on as I know a lot of others do. I just dislike Daphne and Niles as a couple. And actually, I dislike the way their coupleship was handled more than anything!

Yes, it seemed as if it was the Niles/Maris and Niles/Mel relationship once again. Daphne seems so controlling over him in the later seasons.

I went for Maris because Niles' personality was just great when he was married to her!

Yes. The Niles/Daphne relationship worked best when he was still attached to Maris - so i think i have to go for the unseen one.

Daphne. The Maris anecdotes were hilarious but the chemistry between DHP and JL sparkled, even if their relationship did result in poor characterisation when they finally got together.

I wonder why it's easy for people to hate Mel, but not Maris, who was probably quite a lot worse.

Maybe it's because we actually got to see Mel, whereas Maris remained out of sight, and you just can't help love hearing the little tidbits of information about her.

I liked Mel, but it has to be Maris! She was much more interesting than Daphne ever was - which is remarkable considering we never actually saw her!

Never seeing her added to the interest, I think. She remained slightly mysterious, yet we knew quite a lot about her, enough to form our own ideas of what she looked like.

Vera in Cheers was like Maris for the obvious reason you never saw her. Although in one episode where there's a foodfight you see her walk in just as a pie or cake hits her in the face.
I digress. If you were to take every description of Maris and load into one of these computers that can generate a person's image (like the one's the police use to show a person 10yrs etc from now) then you would have something from Dr Who instead of a woman.
Like Vera you built an image in your mind of someone. In this case someone who thought her chocolate allergy entitled her to park in a disabled space, described as caucasian, very caucasian and so on. This is and was the enigma that was Maris. To coin a pun...we'll always have Maris.
