Niles: Earlier Personality or Later Personality?

Postby Bee Gees Fan » Mon Jun 25, 2007 6:11 pm

Okay, a slightly different poll here - Early Niles won the last poll because people believed he was more humourous, but purely on a personality basis, which personality do you prefer - Early, Rigid, Uptight Niles or Later, More Laid Back Niles?

I voted Later, although I like Niles earlier on as well.

Still earlier for me. He didn't really have much of a personality in the later years as far as I could tell.

I think maybe what you're trying to get at here BGF is which Niles would you rather be "friends" with.

In that case, I went with later Niles just because he was slightly less pretentious and you might get him to do some things that early Niles wouldn't do.

I should do a poll like this for Daphne - I know which way you'd vote! :D

I agree that she was more likeable in the earlier years, although I don't think she ever became truly unlikeable. I did feel very annoyed with her in that episode where Roz misunderstood what Niles had said, and she and Niles kept teasing her about it.

As much as I like Niles there were times, all through the series that his snobbishness annoyed me and his attitude to try and get Daphne even if it meant outwardly scuppering her relationship with Donny (a la Decoys). However, I've gone for earlier.

A tie so far...and CNR, you're right, that's kind of what I was thinking of.

Still earlier. He was quirkier and wasn't catering to his wife's every whim.

Early - when he still actually had a personality.

Early Niles for me, just about.

I think he was still catering to his wife's every whim, though, Wezzo?

That would be interesting to discuss - why does Niles cater to Maris and to an extent Daphne's will as well? (I haven't seen many episodes with Mel; was he submissive in their relationship as well?)

Is he just naturally submissive in general? To everybody? Or just to women? He stands up to Frasier.

I've said this before (in fact, I just said it in the Daphne thread)....Niles caters to his women because Niles is a weenie!

Though really, Niles has really spent his entire life trying to please people and be accepted.

Think about it. He probably spent a good share of his childhood trying to please his father and trying to live up to his older brother whom he probably perceived as being "mom's" favorite!

Niles, in his professional life then, deals with conflict on a daily basis. In his personal life, he doesn't like conflict. He just wants everyone happy and doesn't want to cause any strife. In order to do that, you just go along with whatever anyone tells you to do! You don't want to upset the apple cart! Please the people around you and everyone is happy!

Truth be told, I've spent a good share of my own life dealing with that conflict thing! I hate conflict in my personal life. I hate it when people argue around me and I just want things happy and settled. In my job, I'm constantly dealing with conflict. But otherwise, it's a very difficult thing for me to deal with and for a long time, people just sort of walked on my feelings because I didnt' want to upset things or people. I'm better about that now but I still struggle with expressing my feelings because I don't want to upset people or hurt anyone! I'm a lot like Niles in that way! I readily admit that when it comes to some things, I'm a weenie!

Well, you've never seemed like a weenie to me. :)

I don't think as many people have voted this time, though. Later Niles only has one more vote than last time.

I definitely prefer the Niles from the first few seasons, he was much more quirky & condescending. After he got together with Daphne, he seemed to lose all of those qualities which made him my favourite character.

Definitely the earlier seasons. Niles.. just isn't Niles, if he's not 'snobby' or as someone once called him 'Up-Tight?' as he mentioned.

well obviously people prefer the 'laidback, nicer' niles.
but the niles we see from the first couple of seasons is comedy gold!.
especially his banter with Roz
