What's a steak hamper? Is that one of those terms you Brits have for something we Americans know by another name, like bumbershoot/umbrella? I know the "slaughterhouse 5" was a gift basket with 5 kinds of meat, but Niles doesn't give it to Martin. Martin's friends send it to him as condolences for his "loss" of Frasier ("The Late Dr. Crane").

I was going to ask the same thing. I'm picturing a clothes hamper with steaks piled in it. That wouldn't work very well and after a while I'd imagine the steaks would begin to rot something fierce! Nothing smells worse than rotting meat! :D

Yeah, the words "steak" and "hamper" go together about as well in my mind as "fridge" and "pants." Was someone indulging in a certain fudgy confection from Cafe Nervosa before writing this question? I think it might have gotten mixed up with the one Roz's neighbor made.

Hehe, well i've not seen a specific steak hamper, but you get food hampers of all types, like this. They're just your gift baskets really and I suspect you don't keep the meat in there forever ;)

It's US stuff like trolley car and steam shovel that always paint strange pictures in my head. :D

Bumbershoot is possibly more of an American term than British, jr. There was a bit of discussion about it somewhere around here. It's pretty much an umbrella or brolly to Brits. :)

Thanks MC! So, it's pretty much like a Hickory Farms gift basket. I used to buy those for my dad for Christmas when I was a kid.

This is a question for information, rather than a quiz question. Have any of the British members ever heard of an umbrella called a bumbershoot? I never have and I'm British born and bred. Maybe it's a Manchester thing (it was a term used by Daphne).

Nope, this show was the first place i ever heard of the term. There are some threads about it somewhere in the Frasier Discussion board.
