"Alternative" Things To Do Before You Die

Postby kat » Sat Dec 03, 2011 11:06 pm

prompted by a pub conversation, things you want to do in life that don't usually turn up on those lists (although they are welcome too)

mine are

visit the Senna memorial at Imola
visit Senna's grave at Morumbi cemetary Sao Paulo
go to Le Mans, the Indy 500, and the Monaco GP
(predicitble one) see the Northern Lights
If life gives you lemons, make lemon curd

Things I want to do before I die:
Visit Egypt and America

Have a foot popping kiss in the rain
Light a cigarette using a £50 note
Sell some work of mine
Get married

Visit an ikea
Think that's it.

IMHO Ikea is ovverated. You go all the way to Southampton and fight for a parking space, walk towards the building feeling tempted by the world record-sized poster advertising ridiculously cheap meatballs in their restaurant. Then they make you walk around their pre-determined path, which seems to be about three miles long, to ensure that you look at every single item they have for sale, then when you eventually reach the restaurant, there's a queue of about 45 minutes long.

You finally get your 'famous Swedish meatballs', sit down to eat them, and then think - hey, they're just meatballs, probably with eyelids and testicles and all the other bits of animal that weren't good enough to go into pet food, and I could have bought two dozen for a couple of quid in Tesco just down the road. Then you walk through more furniture and assorted crap, buy a set of wooden spoons and nothing else.

Then you drive 60 miles home in the dark, breaking down on the A31 and having to climb down into a ditch to get away from the busy road whilst you wait for the AA. Plus you keep needing a wee the whole time because you're pregnant, and when you get home, you realise you've been out of the house for eleven hours and you haven't even got your bloody wooden spoons anyway, as you left them in the stupid tow truck.

You go to bed, feeling despondent and tired, visualising the over-chirpy AA man bustling around his kitchen making dinner using your wooden spoons, and you decide never to go to Ikea again as long as you both shall live.

Of course, it may not be that way for everyone, and perhaps you'll enjoy it. :D

Travel the world five or six times.
Write for a major publication.
Some sex stuff.
Write and direct a film.
Continue to find work as an actor.

Dull, but those are the things off the top of my head. There's probably more.

I haven't written a list, because i'm not sure I could think of many specific things. If you'd asked my fifteen years ago, I'd have said:

Graduate with a degree in Geography
Find someone who loves me, and get married
Have a child
Find a job I like
Go to a music festival
Go to a Roxette gig

I've done all those things... all right, I didn't plan on the 'divorce' bit, but never mind.

Now I want to live a long and happy life and see Keren do the same, but there are very few specific things I want. It would be nice to fall in love and settle down again (this time hopefully for good), but it's not something I'm desperate for.

It would also be nice to win a major photography competition, but there's a huge element of luck in that, as well as skill that I don't have! Going back to North Wales is a definite 'must', and swimming in Blue Lake - but I've done both of those things already, so I suppose technically they're ticked off my list.

EDIT: Ooh, I also want to see the Giant's Causeway in Ireland, and stand on the Cantilever in Wales.

No dice. I'm a terminal gentleman.

I like the "Man vs. Food" idea, too. I've hit a couple of those joints, but there's a few I'd still really love to try.

I made a list a few years ago, some of which I've managed to tick off, like:
Move out of my Mum's house
Pass my driving test (wrote the list when it seemed like a very distinct possibility)
See Lee Evans/Russell Howard live
Get engaged
Get into university (which I now sincerely regret!)

Some are just total bullshit that I have absolutely no idea what I was thinking when I wrote them...which I won't share as they're unbelievably pathetic  And some I think were just a little too optimistic, although there's still time I guess.

A few left are:
Get married and have all of my Dad's side of the family there
Have kids
Get a house with BF
Graduate uni (this year will definitely be the decider there).
Get a good job related to what I want to do...whatever the hell that is
Make an awesome cake - not entirely Cake Boss standard, but a pretty damn good one.

Also, like IA, I would quite like to go to Ikea. Even my mum, who rarely goes anywhere outside of where she lives has been

I'm down with the awesome cake, but I'm way, way too selfish to care about those other things.

"Kids."

To be fair I don't particularly think I'll make a good parent. I have no idea how to talk to kids for a start, among my various other issues.
