What do you find attractive in a man / woman?

I still don't feel ready for another full-on relationship, but over the past few months I've been doing some thinking about what sort of man would be my ideal partner. So my question to you guys is - what traits do you consider essential in a potential partner, and what traits do you find appealing but not essential?


For me, essential traits are a good sense of humour and intelligence. I don't mean they need a string of degrees, but I do want to be able to have good conversations. Age isn't too important to me, but I wouldn't a huge age gap - aged up to about 42 would be my limit, I think (I'm 33). I also want to be able to be myself with them, and not worry that I'm too girly or giggly when I'm talking to them! Non-smoker is essential too.

There are things I find particularly attractive but could live without - watching a man who can play the piano well is, IMHO, the most sexy thing ever! Although cleanliness is important to me, I also find myself more attracted to men who aren't immaculately groomed and neat - I suppose it makes me feel more at ease about my own wild hair. Men who are slightly geeky appeal to me too, being as I'm a geek myself. Body shape isn't really an issue, but I'm more attracted to guys who are 'chunky' than 'scrawny' - rugby players rather than footy players.. Oh - and they have to like music, doesn't matter what type of music but I just find it odd when people say they don't like music at all!

I'm never expecting to actually find this perfect man, but I can dream!

Heh, that all sound pretty reasonable to be honest DG. It'll be interesting to hear some other female views on what they look for in men. I don't want to play the stereotype here but I do think men are slighly more superficial than women when it comes to finding a partner. One of my first girlfriends had a really good sense of humour and I think that's really important to me. Someone who can be giddy and silly but also have conversations about serious stuff as you said.

As for a serious reply.............

A quote (which escapes me right now so i'll paraphrase) from Adrian Mole springs to mind as an honest opener.
Adrian says something about being in love with his girlfriend for her loving nature and warm heart, and his father replies to the effect if she was ugly as a bag full of spanners he wouldn't have noticed her loving nature and warm bleedin' heart in the first place.

So, in all honesty, I think there was got to be an initial attraction based on looks on some level.
That said, this kind of attraction is only good for interesting a possible partner.It's what the person is like that makes you want to stick around or run a mile.

The things I find attractive in a personality are a VERY GSOH.Not afraid to be a bit silly (or even a lot silly).Off ground tick and hide and seek (especially in Asda) are two of the finest pleasures in life, and even at 35 i'm not ready to give them up thank you very much.
Kind and warm hearted is a must.I don't like mean people, and bitchiness is something that turns me right off.
I like a good serious discussion, and even if all the knowledge is there, willingness to listen, discuss, and learn about a subject is something that's pretty important.


So, has to be pretty (red hair and a nice rack for preference ) doesn't mind acting like a loon and is good natured enough to let me waffle on and on about boring subjects.

Luckily I met her and married her before she could think twice


On the whole though, there are so many people out there looking for so many different things both physically and personality wise, that there really is someone out there for everybody (although it doesn't feel that way at some points in life )

Sense of humour is a big one for me, also has to be similar to mine. Someone who can put up with my neurotic crazy side is also very important! Also reasonably attractive (I think I was quite lucky considering how I look most of the time!) and quite clever. But there's a very fine line between clever and big headedness, something which BF tends to cross from time to time

I go for people I can have a good argument with! Someone who can handle my wildness is great, and sense of humor needed along with a little romance and a deep understanding of my need for music. I don't find looks that important, but if they are cute too even better!

Well... I set up a profile on a dating site, and someone messaged me. Then I found out how much the subscription charge would be to access the message - £30 per month. So I deleted the account again and will now never know whether that may have been the man of my dreams.

I assume they deliberately try to avoid telling you the cost until you actually get a message that you're curious to read - then they spring it on you.
