A thread for anything cool/ awesome you may have witnessed today.
I think this is pretty cool:
Today I went for a drive south into the South Downs above Lewes in East Sussex. They say if the conditions are right you can see a cross cut into the soil on the high downs north of the town. This was cut into the ground during the Battle Of Lewes in May 1264 by the forces of Simon de Montfort against Prince Edward encamped in the town below. The forces of de Montfort wore white crosses to distinguish themselves; the white chalk of the Downs near Plumpton reflected their choice.
I managed to see the shadow of this siege earthwork cut into the hillside, all 747 years old next May. It's a trick of the light that blew me away for a while. Next time I'm getting a picture for posterity.
