Totally acknowledge that.

And to be honest, if celebrities who do donate vast sums get an ego boost and increase their popularity by doing so, then fair play to them. In exactly the opposite way when I hear tht Sharon Osbourne would only do an African appeal as long as she was put up in a 5 star hotel, then she deserves the negative publicity that follows.

That's your opinion, which you're perfectly entitled to. :)

But for me, it just dilutes the actual act of giving. I feel it almost takes something away from the charity they are donating to.

Yeah, but African mouths still get fed, schools still get built and doctors still get trained. Who gives a shit if the money is tainted by what people think of the celebrity.
Plus, don't blame the celebrity, the media is as much to blame. If someone doesn't give money to charity they are described as mean, if they do too much they are described as sanctimonious. The poor buggers cannot win.

Very much your words there, Rodge, not mine. Many charities, through no fault of their own, receive no Government funding and rely solely on donations and as sad as it is, it's unlikely that will ever change. So it's very much "our" responsibility to keep their good work going.

The "moaning" as you so delightfully called it is aimed chiefly at those celebs who don't know anything about the charity they are donating to, only that giving a large sum looks great for them. And there are plenty of them out there.

Where's Aggers gone, she comes here for 5 minutes, stirs up an excellent hornet's nest and then buggers off. I was enjoying that. :?

No, totally wrong, it is not our responsibility to help the developing countries it's our choice. Unfortunately unlike you and I there are many who prefer not to make that choice.

Again, why are you so worried about it. Does it make you feel inadequate, bad? Who gives a toss. They are giving away huge amounts of money, why the hell shouldn't they brag. Hedonsim is not a bad thing.

It could be argued that it's not our responsibility to help any charities at all as it doesn't give Governments any incentive to allocate any funding to those areas currently bolstered by the general goodwill of donors.

I thought "hedonism" was having champagne licked off bare skin whilst lying on a sea of banknotes. At least that's what I was told on Saturday and that was the only reason I let it happen!

 That doesn't tie up with what you described on the sex thread! ;)

Incidentally, the scene you've described above happens in the autobiography of Jordan Belfort, which I read recently. 'Tis a really good book!

Exactly, but not a good enough reason to stop giving from my point of view. But at the same time a reason to push my views on Govts. If everyone did, things would change. Celebrities help hugely in that cause.

There are so many types of hedonism. Self indulging is not a bad thing and if it is bought about by giving pleasure to others as well then even better.

Generally speaking it's some total nonentity (in my eyes) who either has a movie/dvd coming out or a pop star, who is about to release a single or album.

And you still think I read tabloids, don't you, you saucy s*d???!!!

So when would be a good time to stop giving?? When the issue appears to have resolved itself thanks to the generosity of donors like you?? When Governments face up to their responsibilities and do set aside appropriate amounts of funding??

I just looked up Forbes on Google and Oh dear Aggers; it comes up with 3 main titles:-

World's Billionaires
Richest Americans
100 Top Celebrities

It's basically The Mail for rich people???

Aw, you mean you haven't seen that annoying bloody TV advert for it? Even with the teeny tiny (Pontipine)* amount of TV I watch, I don't manage to avoid that one!

Tell you what though - I wanna go on that big water slide in the Barclays advert! Has anyone seen it?

*Sorry, I can't say 'teeny tiny' any more without saying 'Pontipine' after it.

people stopping in front of me in general is annoying.

Also on the Tube, apparently if people lean on the doors it stops the train...or as our driver put it tonight "halts the forward motion of the train"
