Just downloaded 'Brothers in Arms' - Dire Straits. Those who've seen The West Wing's Two Cathedrals ep will know why...

Has anyone used the web browser Google Chrome? I downloaded Gogole Earth today (had it on my old PC, but not this one). It asked me if I wanted the browser as well, so I thought I'd give it a try.

I've been tempted but I really like using Mozilla Firefox as my browser so I'm reluctant to change.

Yes, I like Firefox too, I don't think I'll be swapping. Chrome has a very simple, unfussy design, which I like, but unless there's stuff 'behind the scenes' that I haven't come across yet, I'm not overly impressed.

LOVE the new Christmas Wee Mee!

Thank you. :D

I've recently been converted to the Mozilla Firefox faith! It just seems a much quicker browser than its rivals, and I love the little add-ons that come with it too.

Oh yes, and that little Wee Mee of yours wants willy, DG...

Just noticed that my Laptop's three month 'free trial' anti-virus software expires today. Anyone know of any good freebie ones?

AVG. It's great, free updates etc. Never had any bother with this installed on my machines.

That's the one I was thinking about going with. Ta. :)

Google has antivirus software too, apparently. I think it's actually Norton Security Scan though.

Chrome isn't offering anything that'll take me away from Firefox and Opera. Opera is probably my favourite browser, but firefox has a bundle of great add ons and developer tools - which make me use it the most.

AVG is decent enough - much better than Norton at least. The latest version is a lot more annoying than it used to be, but still better than most of the big name competitors.

I prefer Avast to AVG, but I guess there's not much to choose between them.

As for browsers, I wasn't a huge fan of Google Chrome when I tried it. Firefox 3 with an add-in that makes the URl/search bar results smaller works perfectly for me.

It's certainly better nowadays, i imagine. AVG have shot themselves in the foot with a couple of things lately.

Glad I use Firefox, after hearing the 'scare' about IE. Apparently Microsoft are releasing an emergency patch today. It may be perhaps that the seriousness of it has been hyped up for the media, but having previously experienced similar problems (with a virus which redirected from online banking sites to fake sites), I'm a bit paranoid about it!

I only started using Firefox a month or so ago, although I didn't previously use IE except at work. Probably exaggerated a bit by the media - bashing Microsoft is one of their favourite passtimes.

As for online banking phishing scams, I almost got taken in by a Halifax one a few months back. The only difference between the fake site and the real site was the url started off HTTP instead of HTTPS ('S' stands for 'secure', I believe). I've decided the only way to be totally safe now is to get rid of all my online accounts, which I've since done, and queue up with the pensioners at the branch itself. At least I get to overhear good recipes for Bran loaf whilst I'm waiting...

I never, never click links in emails unless I know where they're from. Some phishing emails are really convincing, but again, I'd never click a link in an email that claimed to be from a bank, ebay, Paypal or anything like that. I've no idea how our computer got infected. This was about five years ago. Possibly hubby clicked a link without realising? I'll blame him. :D

Me neither, except that I did have an online account with Halifax and I thought the e-mail was from them! Only way to be safe is to know you haven't got anything online I reckon. I still shop online of course, it would be too much of an imposition to give that up! :D

I think most companies now state that they don't include links which ask for account details in emails - most ask you to go to their website and log in that way. Better safe than sorry though!

Someone's just sent me a link to a program that allows you to save BBC iPlayer files - has anyone used this?

I thought you could just save it from the iPlayer itself on to your P.C or to portable media. :?
