Not a show i pay that much attention to but my missus watches it and so i know the actor well enough from it. Had no idea he'd been struggling with a long term addiction battle, though. Very sad.

I hear that toward the end of his life David Carradine used to hang himself to get an erection and that's how he died. Talk about a stupid way to die for Kung Fu man!

Apparently some woman had a baby in a hospital and then took the baby home. And it's like a miracle, or something, because there's wall to wall coverage of the event on every news channel.

I've started following the US situation with the Tea Party contingent in the Rep party pushing the House towards a government shutdown. Less of a problem than them playing games with the debt ceiling, but still enough of an irritant i'd have thought. Not sure how their actions will affect public voting for the more moderate Conservatives?

Would a shutdown have any affect on any of you and your friends/colleagues, Cat?

It's the subsequent debt ceiling vote which will be the one to cause real chaos if the Tea Party manage to scupper that. :?

A Federal shutdown wouldn't effect me. I work for the State of Wisconsin as opposed to the U.S. Govt. Tea Partiers have made it perfectly clear from the start that they have no interest in doing anything other than making sure that Obama doesn't succeed. They failed in their bid to have him serve only one term so now they have to work harder.

http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article ... ather.html

An elderly gentleman (aged 74) who is reportedly partially sighted went to pick up his granddaughter (aged 6) from her school to take her to a doctor's appointment. The school sent out the wrong girl and the grandfather didn't realise! He took the girl to the surgery, where she was prescribed liquid paracetamol and then escorted her back to school, all the while not aware that the child he had with him was not his granddaughter. The first anyone realised of it was when the girl went home and showed her parents the medication she'd been given. Her father was understandably shocked and furious that his daughter had been out and about with a man unknown to them.

Thankfully, in this case, it was a genuine mistake and the grandfather had no malicious intent; he genuinely thought the girl he had with him was his granddaughter. I feel sorry for him the most in this situation, as I'm sure he's very upset and embarrassed about it all. Although it's strange that he didn't realise at some point that he had the wrong child with him, I can see how it could happen. He was 74, had poor eyesight, and perhaps was confused? The child that the school sent out was in the same class as the real granddaughter and had the same first name and hair colour. At that age, children can look very similar, especially in school uniform, and when they're that young, even the voices can sound quite similar.

Well, our children don't wear uniforms at school, in a case like this that might have helped, a little. :D

It looks like a clear case of notsobrightisimism...

What I find most weird is that the girl went with him and did not say anything to anyone, not to the guy, a teacher, the doctor...

It is strange, but her father says she is quite shy and not very confident. It's also easy to get confused at that age (she's only six.) I think she was just confused and went with him because she felt it was what she was expected to do.

I was quite the shrinking violet at that age, and I'm not one hundred percent sure I would have spoken up and said, "That's not my granddad."

I hope the grandfather doesn't feel too bad about the situation. He didn't do anything wrong either.

I don't know. Most grandparents can tell their grandkids from other children... Actually even people with pets can tell them from other pets, when other people think they are identical. A cousin of mine has canaries, like maybe two dozens and he can name every one of them, yet to me they are indistinguishable. So as I said it seems weird that this granddad couldn't even recognize his granddaughter.

Oh, I agree it's weird. I just meant that he hasn't done anything wrong in a moral or illegal sense. He made an honest mistake (albeit a pretty big one!) and failed to realise that the child he had with him was not his granddaughter. He didn't have sinister intentions of making off with an unknown young child. He was there for a legitimate reason (to collect his granddaughter) and didn't realise that he had the wrong girl.

At least no harm has come. The little girl was apparently confused at the time, but apart from that, things are as normal with her. I think this whole situation is an example of just how significant human errors can be. Fortunately, in this case, there were no awful consequences.

Actually, I've just remembered an incident from my own childhood (I was about 8 at the time.) My grandmother was at our house (she would have been about 85 then) and some girls who lived in our street had come around to play. They were introduced to my grandmother. Shortly afterwards, I went upstairs to have a shower, leaving my sister t play with the girls. When I returned downstairs, my grandmother asked me, "Are you their sister?" (meaning, was I the sister of the girls from next door.)

I was surprised (in an amused way) for a second and then said something like, "Grandma, it's me, Michelle!"

So, it can happen (not recognising your own family/grandchildren.) Why it happened in this gentleman's case is something we can only speculate on. The poor eyesight might be part of it. Perhaps he has other conditions/ailments as well. Perhaps he doesn't spend a lot of time with his granddaughter, or it had been a while since he'd last seen her.

I suppose the upshot of it is that the parents will think hard before giving him such responsibilities in the future.

This game of cat and mouse with the US debt ceiling is beyond ridiculous. It's time for the Republican party to stop the tail wagging the dog and put the Tea Party representatives in their place. For people who wang on about US freedoms and constitutional rights, etc, and i've never seen so many fuckbrained assholes trample over democracy - and waste so much time and effort attempting to defund a healthcare bill that was effectively voted for by the majority at the last presidential election.

The moderate Reps must surely now take a stand for their own party and tell idiots like Ted Cruz where to go. Redraw the opposition battle lines. When Wall Street loses confidence in the Republicans ability to look after their interests, you know you're up shit creek. This is surely going to destroy the Republican Party reputation, but i couldn't really give a shit about that as much as the knock on effect to the stability of the world economy - and real people's lives - that these asshats are playing games with.

Is it probably time for Gohmert to resign? He's toothless to control the extremist party politics and still being quoted about impeaching Obama if the default occurs. Give it up.

As an aside to this posturing, i'm still curious about this constant warning of 'Obamacare' as the start of a communist USA and the ultimate destruction of the country?
a) If it's going to create a communist state, then how come pretty much every other first world country in the world isn't in that situation when they have a far greater national health care infrastructure than this allows for?

b) If this healthcare implementation is going to be the 'suicide' for Obama and the Democratic Party that the Conservative-leaning commentators claim, then why not let it pass and allow those sown seeds to be reaped?

I simply don't follow the logic. And when the likes of windbags Pat Robertson and Newt Gingrich are getting twitchy (a lot of wealth to be diluted by any economic collapse there) are the extremists so far off their rockers that they see the self-inflicted catastrophe as the perfect alibi to claim their 'God's wrath' masturbation fantasy because of Obamacare, legalising same-sex marriage, liberalism, gays in the military, and all the other bollocks they constantly cry about?

Looks like some sense is finally prevailing in the Senate, and i'm assuming the soundbites are true that moderate Reps will help pass the bill to raise the debt ceiling through the House - in spite of Ted Cruz still carrying on with his sociopathic ramblings. Mind, it's probably only a delay to repeating the same bullshit circus in another three or so months.

Baffles me that people have talked of Cruz making a serious run for the top job. How insane is that? His performance this last few weeks has surely shot that to bits?

The funniest thing about that is that Cruz was in fact NOT born in the United States. He was born in Canada. Obama who actually WAS born in the United States though is still going through this birther shit! But that apparently seems perfectly fine in Fucked Up Teapublican World.

Cruz is insane. But that's what that party keeps putting out there. The nuttier they are, the more they hail them as the next best thing.
