What news story has caught your attention recently?

Postby Dorset Girl » Thu Nov 15, 2007 2:25 pm

Not sure if this will work as a thread, but we'll see. If not, we'll just let it die a quiet death...

I often see headlines that I think are worthy of mentioning - either funny ones, or serious ones, where I am interested in other people's opinions. I'm never sure which thread to post them in, so I thought perhaps a 'news' thread would be a good idea?

So - please post any funny headlines, and / or ones which are worthy of debate.

Here's one that caught my attention today - is this correct, or just another biased piece of journalism?!

This is the one I posted yesterday in the Dear Diary section. It just made me laugh because all I could think of was The Simpson's episode when Homer was licking toads!

I'm not NOT licking toads!

Yeah, I read that story Cat! I can honestly say that I never knew it was possible to get 'high' by licking toads! I don't reckon I'll be trying it any time soon though.

Goodness! Someone told me about this at work today and I didn't believe him, I thought he was just trying to wind me up with an anti-political-correctness lecture.

Anyway I enjoyed myself and annoyed my colleages by trying out a variety of fearsome, annoying and/or offensive laughs.

If the "ho, ho, ho" story is factual, it's pretty much one of the dumbest things I've read in a while!

This may be a bit weird, but surely each to their own in the privacy of their own house/room whatever?

Doesn't right to me that he was convicted of a crime. It's not like he was out in the hallway where everyone could see him.

 No, I don't understand why he was charged either. It was a hostel not a private house, but I'd be surprised if it says anywhere in their rules 'tenants shalt not shag bicycles!'

Poor guy - it must be punishment enough for him to have had this story published, and his full name included. :?

Last night, a story caught my eye on Newsnight (and in todays Times)...fifty years ago "Buster" Crabbe went missing after diving in Portsmouth Harbour. Yesterday some Russian said he killed Crabbe after catching him trying to mine a Soviet battleship that would carry Nikita Sergeyviech Khruschev back to Moscow. Intriguing story, I'll try finding it online.

They were talking about that on South Today last night... apparently, the family of Buster Crabbe still don't believe the story - they reckon they've been given several different stories over the years and that it's too implausible to be true? Seems weird the Russian guy would 'come clean' like that if he wasn't speaking the truth though. :?

the assumption is that the story has been told so that it curries favour with the Russian people as the Russians are starting to return to a Cold War footing with us. Any story that is negatively toned towards us goes down well in Russia. As for me...he probably was killed trying to do something. Though killing in Portsmouth Harbour...well it provokes all kinds of things.

Probably in other places too, but this is taken from IMDb:
Britney Spears is facing more legal trouble after running over another paparazzo's foot on Wednesday night - leaving the snapper screaming in pain. The troubled pop star was leaving the parking lot of The Four Seasons Hotel in Beverly Hills, California when she accidentally rolled her Mercedes-Benz over a photographer's foot, causing a ruckus among the paparazzi. In video footage of the incident posted on Tmz.com, Spears can be seen trying to make her way out of the car park as a hotel valet tells the photographers to "back off the driveway." Seconds later, a man can be heard screaming and the other snappers shout out to Spears, saying, "Whoa! Stop! Stop!" The valet then says, "Back off the drive gentlemen, this won't happen if you back off." This is the third time Spears has been involved in such an accident - last month, she ran over the foot of another photographer, while doing the same to a Los Angeles County Sheriff deputy, who got his foot caught under the star's Mercedes. This is the latest in a string of traffic incidents for the 25-year-old - on Monday, Spears was accused of leaving a paparazzo seriously injured after knocking him off his motorcycle. She was also recently caught running a red traffic light at a busy junction in Los Angeles, while she narrowly escaped a hit and run conviction in October after agreeing to settle an August parking lot accident out of court.

Now i'm no fan of Ms Spears, but am i the only one who thinks paparazzi photographers can have no cause for complaint when anything like this happens to them? Just get out of the fucking way and stop bugging the shit out of people.

But even when she was doing really well, they were chasing her, weren't they?! Perhaps they've contributed to her current state?! It must be very difficult to be in the eye of the media all the time, especially when things aren't going so great in your life.

They weren't on her like they are now. But then again, I'm sorry but this IS the price you pay for fame.

People all want to be famous and then complain when they lose their privacy. You can't have it both ways. And if you WANT to have it both ways, don't be out there drawing attention to yourself 24/7.

I only feel bad for celebs when the paps start peeking in their windows of their houses and those sorts of things. But if you're out in public, you're free for the picking and that is what you asked for when you wanted fame!

If Britney would stop being so damn stupid and get her shit together, the pap would leave her alone eventually because she would stop being a "story."

I'm in two minds about this - you're right, Cat, if she got her act together they would probably back off a bit, but on the other hand, it must be very hard to do that when your every word and move is being scrutinised by the public.

Yes, you give up a certain amount of privacy when you become famous, but not being able to step out of your house without telephoto lenses watching you all over the place must make you feel like you're a prisoner in your own home sometimes!

Princess Diana - I don't believe the whole 'conspiracy' thing (i.e. that she was murdered), but I do believe that part of the cause for the accident was because the paparazzi were tailing her. Of course, there would be no demand for them to do that if people weren't so fascinated with the lives of celebrities, so I suppose they're not totally to blame! :?

I'm not completely defending the pap. They are an obnoxious sort and they do things that are increasingly dangerous. I do think they are in part to blame for Diana's accident but then again, her limo driver didn't have to drive like a maniac to get away from them. It's not like they were coming after her with loaded guns or bows and arrows or something. They were photographers!

Yes, it's hard to live your life in a fishbowl but so many of these people are addicts of some sort that, as much as they complain about the attention they get, when they don't get it, they do something stupid or crazy in order to draw attention to themselves. They are addicted to the attention.

Look at Michael Jackson. He leaves the country to "escape" the attention he was getting which he wouldn't have been getting if he wasn't such a freak (he brought that on himself). He wasn't getting any attention any longer when he was living in Dubai so he moves back to the US. He thrives on attention.

If Britney wanted to escape some of the attention she is getting, she could. She's a popwreck to the maximum and if she would behave herself, like I said, eventually, people would get bored of her.

Yes, Michael Jackson... well, words can't describe his general oddness, and I'd definitely say he's addicted to the attention!

I wonder why so many celebs - music stars in particular - get messed up on drugs and drink? Is it the pressure? The 'culture' of the business? The money that they have? Or is it, as you said, for attention? I imagine it must be great when you have an article written saying how fantastic you are, but what a downer it must be if it's the opposite.

I think I'd hate it myself, I'd rather just stay an anonymous person, able to go about my life without the hassle. I wouldn't mind their pay cheques though.

I think the drugs and alcohol is a combination of peer pressure and just having the money.

I remember Kelsey Grammer once said that he was addicted to cocaine the very first time he tried it but before he got famous, he couldn't afford it so he only used once in a while. Once he had money, he was instantly out of control with the drugs and alcohol. He also readily admits that he has a very addictive personality and once he had the means, he went crazy. He was famous so he could get women and he had money so he could get drugs.

I imagine it's like that with a lot of people. It's not a life I'd wish to lead. But like you said, the paycheck would be nice!

Japanese hunting humpback whales. Maybe it's by watching Star Trek IV but I despise this beastly action. Bollocks its for research. I hate to say it, but if only a Bird of Prey would decloak over the whaling vessels and scare the shit out of those bastards.
