I just finished a book called "Child 44" It was about a man who worked for the Soviet MGB right after WWII and his quest to solve a series of murders. It was the first novel the author had written and it was fairly decent. A bit unbelievable at points but that's usually par for the course in these types of books.

I recently started the Game of Thrones series. Only a couple chapters in but I'd like to get the first book finished before the next season of the show starts.

'Toast', by Nigel Slater.

Found it on a bus - it had been left there deliberately, it's one of a million books that were 'released into the wild' to celebrate 2011's World Book Night. It has a number in it, I'm going to go to the website and register it in a moment, then I can find out how far it's travelled!

It's a great read - an autobiography of a childhood remembered through food! Kind of hard to explain, but I would definitely recommend reading it.

I've never read it either.

I'd like to though.

I finished "The Elephant Vanishes", and since I tragically don't have any more Haruki Murakami books (the only other one I have is "The Wind-Up Bird Chronicles") I went back to finishing "Life of Pi." It's good, but my mind keeps wanting to get back into Murakami's wonderfully strange world.

Albania - Who Cares?

Written by a BBC News correspondent, in 1992. The horrific true stories it contains make me feel thankful for my own comfortable and safe life. Tales of torture, starvation and all deprivation. I looked up some of the News footage from the time - the BBC filmed inside an orphanage where the children had literally nothing - no food, clothes, chairs, heat, blankets, window glass, beds, toys, clean water, baths, carpet, toilets...

I'd like to see how things have changed in the country since that time. I wonder if there has been an 'Albania two decades on' type documentary made?

Backbeat, the Earl Palmer story. Earl Palmer was one of the greatest session musicians. Everyone on this forum has heard Earl Palmer. He died a while ago. Earl was a hero of mine. He still is. I constantly teach his style and pass on his legacy to students. I will never be Earl, but I can help people learn from his massive contribution. I believe he is the most recorded musician in history at this time.

I am currently reading 4 books and about to finish one of them, an historical novel by Allan Masse, Tiberius. It is ok. He is no Robert Graves though.

The work I am really enjoying though is, The Will. A work of philosophy by a fellow Australian Professor Brian O'Shaughnessy. I had been putting it off due to time constraints, but now I wish to finish both volumes.

The other work is a comedic novel, A confederacy of dunces, by John Kennedy Toole. It is very funny. :-D

One of my favourite books ever. That and 'Better Than Life' weave all the stories from S1-6 into a coherent story, in a pretty amazing way. Grant and Naylor write much better together than they do seperately IMHO - one brings the sci-fi, the other brings the humour.

Kate Atkinson - Case Histories

I've not read any of her books until now, for some reason I was under the impression that she wrote trashy 'romance' novels, which I usually dislike intensely! However, I was totally wrong. I picked this one up from a 'book crossing' site - has anyone heard of them? That's the third BC book I've had now.

Anyway - an excellent novel, I really enjoyed it. Lots of different threads and twists, all coming together at the end.

Yeah, like Doug Naylor's solo Dwarf episodes, it was much more sci-fi and less comedy orientated. The plot was decent, but it just wasn't Red Dwarf. Rob Grant's Backwards makes a much more satisfying conclusion to the novels. He was clearly the funnier half of the partnership.
