Forever Jung wrote::twisted: The biggest difference i've seen between book and film (although i've only read 3 Bond books to date) was Moonraker.

Completley different story.
The only two things the movie and the book have in common are that the good guy is called James Bond, the the bad guy is called Hugo Drax.

The movie..........

Spoiler: show
Some nutter has decided to take his own special master race to a space station, kill everyone on earth, sit around for a few years, then take his race of supermen/women back down to claim the planet.

The book.............

Spoiler: show
A nazi nutter who was injured in the war and mistaken for an allied soldier makes himself rich, and under the guise of test firing a new weapon that will protect England he secretly plans to launch it at London.
Going into space is never mentioned, and neither is creating a master race.
Far less gags and gadjets.

I find the book more enjoyable.

Hehe, yep, most of the movies and books end up having lives of their own. The only thing they often have in common is a title. Quantum Of Solace was only a title for 'Bond22' and the movie used nothing from that short story. Another short, From A View To A Kill, is nothing like the movie A View To A Kill. The Spy Who Loved Me is nothing to do with the movie version. etc.

 I haven't seen the movie for a long time, so I could be mistaken, but I remember that From Russia From Love was stuck pretty closely to the original story.

On the subject of favourite actor to play Bond, when I was a kid I liked Roger Moore, but i've become more of a Connery fan as i've got older.
I think Moore brings a bit more humor to the role, whereas Connery is more darker and kickass.
He's also very close to Flemming description to what Bond looked like.
I'm sure I read somewhere that Flemming objected to Connery being cast, but later relented.

Tis true. IIRC, it was an English male model that he liked in initial casting - i forget his name.

I think Roger Moore was actually their first choice for the role but he was too busy back then with his series (The Saint) and they had to find someone else.

Yep, there are varying stories around the time of setting up for Dr No. Moore was already doing the Saint and so the Bond guys thought he'd fit the role, but i don't think the Saint guys wouldn't let him audition. The model guy - i still can't recall his name - won a contest to 'find James Bond' and so won an audition for the role. Broccoli was a fan because of his look, but I think he was eventually rejected after seeing his actual acting. I dont believe he ever did anything movie wise.

I've got a Bond book that claims Cary Grant was a first choice with Broccoli - probably because they were good friends. I think he was overlooked, along with a bunch of other actors, because they wouldn't sign up to a series of Bond movies. They would only accept one or two movie deals where the producers were contracting for a minimum of 5 movies.

It was Fleming who really hated Connery, but it seemed to work out alright in the end. :D

Skyfall - 8.5/10

* Contain spoilers *

Difficult to know where to start summing up this movie after first viewing. It's a pretty damn good film and I definitely enjoyed it. But, I don't quite see it at the levels critics are currently lauding it. There's something missing that i can't currently put my finger on. So here's some initial musings.

First of all i have to commend the production crew who have worked overtime to create a beautifully shot adventure in some truly stunning locations, complimented by wonderful set designs. The story was a fairly straight forward revenge flick and the well-publicised budget troubles probably helped to give a fairly stripped back, almost minimalist style to the majority of events.

I did initially find it a little jarring to have the Daniel Craig 'reboot' jump from the new, young, wet-behind-the-ears, Bond of Casino Royale/Quantum Of Solace to become this aged, jaded, figurative fossil of British Intelligence in Skyfall. It worked for me, and i didn't mind the change. I liked the young Q.

Certainly not your high-octane Bond pacing from Sam Mendes, but it worked well for the most part, and i did like the portrayal of Bond in this story. Craig had some decent diaogue and was rewarded with a few slight one-liners that i like my Bonds to quip. Not sure if it was simply down to his directing style, but i didn't feel he ever allowed that spike in the adrenalin/tension at any point. Can't think back to a particular moment (the great opening chase and train fight notwithstanding) where i felt the 'danger' for Bond. Minor quibble though, as the actual action, even when in a short burst, was caged within wonderful settings. The Shanghai technicolour neon skyscraper, for example, looks stunning. The pre-credit chase and fight was a spectacular, action-packed, sequence. Those stuntmen earned their corn.

Magnificent to see Javier Bardem played the sort of campish crazy ass villain that i like, and he enjoyed some memorable bad-guy moments, but all the actors played their part.

I think the story slightly ran out of steam in the final part, as the villain's complex plans diluted into your basic all guns blazing attack. Some have criticised the fairly small scale finale set piece, but i felt the whole battle at Skyfall worked.

Quite a cheesey introduction to the new Moneypenny but a fitting ending for Dench as M, and a pleasing welcome to Fiennes as the new boss.

Overall, i'd currently place it slightly behind Casino Royale in the Craig outings. That may change with further viewings. A worthy outing and i have to reiterate how great the cinematography is. Got to be some techncical awards coming their way.

I agree with almost everything said above. Whilst very enjoyable, I actually didn't really very feel excited/engaged with anything in the first half of the film. The opening sequence just kinda washed over me and wasn't a patch on the Casino Royale chase. I'm not even sure what the point of the plot was that took place (with the Bond girls) in the spectacular paradise like locations other than to make it feel like a Bond movie. The series NEEDs to let go of these tropes and just concentrate on making a good film - there've been enough of these movies now that they should be able to 'branch out' in a new direction with the character. It wasn't until the second half that I felt that I felt the film might be up to something interesting. From the banter with Q, and the introduction of Fines character - I'm actually hopeful Bond might actually get to develop some relationships (of equals of sorts) and perhaps a even a team. From the London fiasco onwards to the Straw Dogs finale, I did really enjoyed the film. Cinematography-wise, the photography in Scotland was the films best - but mind you if screw up making that lanscape look breath-taking there's a problem.

So, when Frasier said that he was the Broccoli of dating, that didn't mean that he dated Bond-girls, did it? :D

Skyfall starts here tonight. I have tickets for tomorrow night. I have managed to avoid anything you guys have written about it so far so I'm good. All I'm hoping for is that it's a damn sight better than Quantum of Solace!

Skyfall 9/10

Well, I loved it from start to finish. I found it engaging from the very get-go. Watching the initial chase scene (particularly the motorcycle part) was more fun after seeing the Top Gear episode on 50 years of Bond Vehicles.

I really liked the final battle at the house. It was fun and it didn't just feel like a blazing guns shootout to me. Quite happy I had no idea what was coming. I think I would have been really annoyed had I known that one little plot point.

One of my favorite things was that the audience applauded when Bond opened the garage door to reveal the Aston Martin. M's reaction to the car was great too.

I also LOVED the way they introduced Moneypenny. Didn't find it cheesy in the least. Just thought it was fun.

Yes, i saw that TG episode after seeing Skyfall, and it reinforced what a great sequence it was. A great way to open.

I didn't applaud, but i was damn pleased to see it :D
