The George Lazenby Experience
Lazenby, henceforth known as The Man, actually came in through the front and into the basement down past us. Baseball cap, a daring black and yellow striped top (my eyes...). Smiled. "Alright, guys how's it going?" There was at least 15 of us in the basement, we thought were it...I was 6th in line. We clapped or rather my new mate clapped and then I joined in and he walked past smiling, saying: "Been a long time since I heard applause!"
He sat down, some chatter. My nerves were taking hold. I was talking rigidly...as if I was really, really cold...you know, the jaw tightened.
Anyway, I didn't have my digital camera or rather the one the family has...mum had taken it to Weymouth where she had been since Thursday. So my phone had to do but the batt' had gone down sharply.
It eventually got to me, the line. I approached him, he said hello and I put down that picture (the St. Paul's one) and he smiled. He actually picked it up looking at it and said "Been a long time since I saw that." I actually was nervous enough to tell him it was the deleted scene.
He looked up at me. "I did my shoulder doing that."
Now, yes, I knew that but to actually hear it from the horse's mouth as it were...well...he smiled. "Want me to sign it?"
"Please."
Then as I took the picture I found myself saying:
"Mind if ask you a question?"
"Sure"
Now, when I get nervous I say things normally I would not say as being an ill-confident man.
"It's a silly question but all the years since you played Bond there's been a lot of criticism as you as Bond. Ever been a moment when you want to punch a wall?"
He smiled, looked a little...well I don't know but that kind of laidback stuff.
I immediately swore (well mentally)...
"I'm sorry, that sounds such a stupid question. Just it's for my own kind of er..."
He smiled again. "Nah, well you know I got used to it and besides I've always taken stuff like that on the chin and roll with the punches."
"Oh, great..." I say...something like that. "It's been my favourite film since I was a kid..."
"Thanks, you're too kind."
"...not that I'm old enough. to have seen it first hand." I then extended my hand and he shook it.
Spent the rest of the day in a daze. The mobile pics aren't too good (basement...etc) but as far as I'm concerned, the handshake...the picture comment was worth it.
"I'm afraid I can't. I shall be at home listening to Schubert whilst ironically viewing Canadian pornography."
