Fairly quiet in Bond movie world currently, but a new Bond author was announced recently.

Do people think of the Bond in the novels or the Bond in the films (i.e. the cheasier gadget, non re-boot, versions) as the true representation of 007? This MGM ting isn't looking good for the 'Daniel Craig era'. I wasn't sure, reading the last few comments, why there is all this talk of replacing him though.

Yes, I do remember James Bond JR

I probably think of Bond more in movie terms than the books. Not necessarily the cheesy gadget Bond so much, though. Connery in From Russia With Love is still my favourite.

I wouldn't change Craig for now. I'd give him a Bond outing with a couple of gadgets and jump him forward to the more experienced, self-assured agent.

Hmmm - whilst I didn't enjoy the last film so much, I liked the direction the franchise has taken with Craig. I'd like to see more before they revert back to the Connary days.

I didn't like Quantum of Solace at all but I kind of like Craig. As I mentioned previously, it's not Craig's fault they've started to write Bond more like Jason Bourne than James Bond.

I like "gadget" Bond and I'd tend to agree with MC in that I would like to see Craig become a bit less "wet behind the ears" and start being a bit more gadgetey. Like Brosnan's Bond. I think he was the perfect balance of old and new.

I suppose Casino Royale was as 'stripped back' as they needed to go with Bond after the ott theatrics of Die Another Day. But, QoS went even further and just became a more generic action movie in too many ways. People can laugh at it but you need the Bond elements that make it instantly recognisable as Bond and you might as well cater for the Bond fans as much as trying to open it out to your average movie goer. There's enough fans to keep you in business forever.

As Cat says, it's not Craig's fault with the direction they took. I like him too, and i think he could easily manage a more 'traditional' outing. He proved he could play Bond in CR as far as i'm concerned. He doesn't need to be put back in the style of a Moonraker type bond, but there was nothing wrong with the Goldeneye Brosnan Bond.

This is why, perhaps, I will never be a true Bond fan - I find it difficult to define what exactly Bond is or should be.

When I was little, I was all over the gadgets - in fact, they were the reason I sat through films when on TV. Now, the gadgets and comic book villains make it difficult for me to buy into the Bond world when I'm watching it. When I watched Casino Royale, I liked the fact that he didn't need any extra weapons cus HE was THE WEAPON. It also helped that Craig looked more like a man of action or a 'thug in a dinner suit' as when I now watch earlier movies (even the Brosnan ones) I don't quite believe Bond could beat any up let alone get through all the rough and tumble.

You're right the new ones are more Bourne now. I think though, if the last one had made more sense and had not been quite so un-even (or rediculous) there might not be too much of an issue with it's current incarnation.

Note. I don't mean comic book villains as a dig, I love comic book films - but I wonder if I should consider Bond franchise more as super hero movies rather than action espianage films?

I do, too. It's just some of those scripts Brosnan got stuck with were so damn awful.

Did you hear the guy who bought it? he actually said he was going to take it for a spin around London on the night he had possession of it. I'd be bricking it over some prick crashing in to me

Wow. I can imagine ladies walking up to him and actually removing their knickers right there and then as he drives around :D

Watched half of From Russia With Love last night. Always liked this film, only Goldfinger bursts over the line with it in my own choice of favourite.

I like You Only Live Twice from the Connery era the best I think. FRWL is always good value thanks to Robert Shaw's star turn.

When I saw this thread at the top of the page I assumed there'd been a bit of news on Bond 23 that I'd missed. Fat chance! It's ironic production is being held up due to the financial mess at MGM as a new Bond flick would provide a huge cash boost.

No wonder they're in trouble if they can't see the value in getting a new Bond flick in production ASAP...

From Russis With Love is still my favourite Connery Bond, but i understand why Goldfinger is seen as the de facto performance by so many.

As far as MGM goes, i can only think it's a cash flow situation that's scuppering them. I imagine financial people aren't allowing them to speculate to accumulate at the level needed for Bond at the moment, so they're unable to stump up the capital that would likely get a good return. Might also be stuck by potential buyers causing a hold up with any financial decisions?

You Only Live Twice completes my top three. It's slick, sexy, and heavy on the violence. Come on MGM, clock's ticking..

I saw this a little while ago. Was going to post it but then I got sidetracked. I hope after all this time it's decent. I was very disappointed in Quantum of Solace.

I need to watch QoS again, as i haven't watched it since it first appeared, but there were things i did like and things i didn't like. It's definitely not as good as Casino Royale (which i watched again recently and still loved it). Disappointing is probably a fair word to use for QoS.

Sam Mendes sounds like a decent enough shout to direct. He's certainly more likely to pace it/edit it more coherently than the QoS frenzy. I'd expect the next story will allow for a more considered approach, too. I'm glad Craig will get another go at the role anyway.
