i bought The Hobbit not too long ago. I'm not a huge fan of the LoTR movies because I think they're way too long but I quite enjoyed The Hobbit.

The LotR movies can be great if you look at each one as a two-parter and just watch them in separate halves. I agree they're a bit too much to stomach in a whole sitting though.

I confess i've never sat through a full showing of any of the LotR movies. I've pretty much seen each of them through watching various bits at different times, but none from start to end ina single sitting... "i don't know whyyyyy".

Maybe they would be better that way. I just got so bored after the first 400 hours that I wanted to slit my wrists!

Recently bought a couple of much wanted DVDs from the States only to discover that they are Region One and don't play on my DVD player, and I can't change the region on my laptop any more than once - so no good there either! So, question is, any way I can play them and what exactly does it mean by the different regions, ie why do they have to be made differently for different countries??

Have you checked online to see if your DVD model can be made multi-region with an 'unlock code' or other hack? Many players allowed this.

It's not illegal to unlock a player. The region system was really only created by companies for marketing purposes in different parts of the world because you have different theatrical release dates, etc. It's become more irrelevant now, but you'll find Blu Ray still works in a similar way - with lettered regions rather than numbered.

Anyway see if any of these are helpful:

You probably aren't looking to shell out cash, but if all else fails then decent, branded multi-region players can be picked up from £30 up on Amazon, Play, etc.

Picked up a cheap copy of Noel Gallagher's High Flying Birds: International Magic Live At The O2 on Blu Ray. Not bad at all.

Have you got round to watching every single one of them?

 oh my, no. Probably watched around 75-80% but that number goes down every month as I find myself ever more drawn to irresistible bargains. Still, keeps me off the streets, etc etc..

Picked up Metallica's Through The Never and Muse's Live At Rome Olympic Stadium pretty cheap on Blu Ray. Stunning productions on the pair.
