Memorable one-episode appearances

Postby PistolPoet » Fri Jan 24, 2014 3:20 pm

There are a few one-time characters that I really liked, but they are often overlooked because they only had a few minutes of screen time. Some of my favourites:

Ned Miller, the station manager from Oops. I know there are only so many story arcs you can write about a guy who constantly wants to kick people's heads in, but I was always sorry he wasn't around for a few more episodes. And the casting choice was great, I don't know that actor, but he was spot on.

Donny's secretary in To Tell the Truth. Best line delivery: "And, Donny... Mustard."

And, of course, Steve from Farewell, Nervosa. Gotta love that guy.

I liked the gatekeeper from Enemy At The Gate, even though I hated the episode. I thought he was a perfect foil for Frasier who on the other hand was a perfect ass in that episode. I for one don't consider that he paid money for nothing as he kept saying. He did use their services and it was clearly stipulated in the rules before he got there. If he didn't agree with the rules then he should have stayed away from the parking. Instead, he did something perfectly useless and pointless and wasted dozens of people's time, some maybe that couldn't afford to be late for work unlike him who apparently didn't care about these details. When I think about this episode, it makes me want to get there and punch Frasier in the nose for his stupid actions. The gatekeeper on the other hand had a normal reaction and never crossed the line. Other than that, the only saving grace of this episode is the brief speech that Frasier gives when he gets to the radio station.

Totally agree about Enemy at the Gate Patrick. That is another one of those episodes where I just want to slap the snot out of Frasier. It's $2.00! Pay it and write a letter of protest if it's that important to you. The gatekeeper is really good and the end cracks me up.

I always liked the character of Roger in Love Stinks. I wish they would have actually made him a regular character for a while. That episode was horrible but he was good.
This is the STUPIDEST day I've ever had!

Yeah, I've always thought Roger was perfect for Roz. And I usually don't like hunky types, but he was pretty hot as well :).

Yes, Frasier is very irritating in this episode and I don't like watching it. He should've realised in any case that the gatekeeper wasn't in a position to make a concession, even if he had sympathised with him.

I'm sure she appears in more than one episode, but I really like the waitress in My Coffee With Niles. Especially the line 'We have a team of specialists working on it'! :D

Yes, she was good and that's why they used her in many episodes.

Little Frasier and little Niles in Where Every Bloke Knows Your Name. They were adorable and so well cast that I was really sorry they never came back. I thought they were much better actors than their counterparts in Deathtrap, but by season 9, I suppose they were too old to reprise their roles.

I agree, the little brothers were terrible in Deathtrap, I suppose they had to get them quite young to explain how they could have completely forgotten the incident, even younger than the actors who got the parts. I know I would have remembered burying a skull when I was those ages, plus they were two, all the more unlikely that they would both have forgotten.

About that skull, it's very likely that it was a fake in plaster as is most commonly used nowadays to teach anatomy. A forensic doctor would determine that in about ten seconds, which makes the delivery of an arrest warrant very unlikely... I know that they can't just arrest someone without sufficient cause in the US, especially for a crime allegedly occurring decades before, I mean they can hardly argue that he was a threat to society... So that makes the ending a bit iffy.

Yes, I love them - so pretentious just like big Frasier and Niles! There's also little Frasier and Niles in Rooms With A View.

"I don't like him!" was well delivered by little Frasier. :D

Rodney. He was a pretty darn good Niles-clone!

I also liked Guy from the Ski Lodge. Annie was painful, though.

Enemy at the Gate... I found that one an incredible stretch from start to finish. First, the gate guy probably would have let him go anyway since he turned right around the booth, and the company probably wouldn't want an uproar over an accident. Second, (and in Frasier's defense!) typically in customer-service type situations, you'd absolutely swallow $2 just to get an obnoxious customer out of the way (and hopefully keep them and everyone else happy). I can't imagine any real parking garage, particularly a cheapo $2 one, to go nuts over a single customer. Third, as people have mentioned, the fact that well-off Frasier just didn't pay up... really? Writing a letter of complaint, sure I can see him doing that, but this...?

The whole episode requires a heck of a lot of suspension of disbelief!

The punchline to the episode is a guilty pleasure though! "My brother was there for moral support and, let's face it, someone to talk to."

$2 for twenty minutes! You find that to be cheap! Some people barely make that much, WORKING! I have to wonder what you would call expensive parking.

"Oh, spare me, you ludicrous popinjay!"

Yup, Rodney was great :). I keep imagining that fight between Niles and him, both unable to make a proper fist, let alone use it :P.

Guy was funny. 'I'm not gay, Guy!' Lots of good lines but very unbelievable with everyone room hopping and jumping into each other's beds!

Re: the enemy at the gate - I got the impression that the exit gate wouldn't operate unless the money was paid and that the enemy wasn't able to do much about it? In the end it was just Frasier wanting to make his point as always!

Oh, Rodney. I would've loved to see that episode filmed live. It must've been so hilarious to watch. Also, the casting for a Niles look-a-likes and acting like him... must've been a lot of fun to watch too.
