Episode Synopsis

KACL's support staff are angry that new station manager, Kate Costas, has refused to give them their annual 5% pay rise. Frasier manages to get caught up in the debate and somehow ends up with the task of convincing the on-air talent to strike if the support staff strike. This is achieved by a nice bit of reverse psychology from Martin who says that Kate might come after the more highly paid staff next. With everyone behind the staff, and with Frasier newly elected spokesmen after Noel Shempsky was ousted, he goes to face Kate.

The antagonistic air that has existed between them since they met soon takes hold, but then lust takes over and Frasier and Kate find themselves locked in a passionate embrace. After telling his family what happened, Frasier decides he must go back to Kate's office and sort out the matter at hand. Both are pretty sheepish about the incident, but Frasier does manage to get a 4% pay rise out of Kate before lust takes over again and they find themselves having sex on Kates's desk. What will become of them.....?

Episode Highlights

- After finding out he has not been invited to Frasier's 'party', not knowing it is for the on air staff:
Martin: Feel like a weiner, Niles.
Niles: You bet I do.

Martin: You put on quite a show.
Gil: Oh you've heard my radio programme.
Martin: No just coming through the door.

- In discussions with Kate:
Frasier: This is about what you're doing to the little people which is the shame of Seattle.
Kate: No, this is about your ego which is the size of Seattle.

- After the first discussion 'meeting':
Frasier: I was elected to present our demands to Kate.
Daphne: That was a smart move - did you give her a good tongue lashing?
Frasier: In a manner of speaking, yes.

- After Frasier describes his lust for Kate as 'animal like':
Daphne: I'm no stranger to that feeling myself. Why, you could be standing next to the same person, month after month, then you could be ripping each other's clothes off. There's a word for that....
Niles: Hope.

- After Daphne says men have used sex to get what they want:
Frasier: How can we possibly use sex to get what we want? Sex is what we want!

- Outside Kate's office during the second 'meeting':
Roz: Frasier's hanging tough in there - he's pounding on the desk shouting "more, more, more".

Frasier Online Episode Review

The first in a 2 part story arc sees Frasier leading the KACL's staff dispute with Kate over their raise in salary, but ends up being consumed with lust for her and having sex with her on her desk! While the premise is great, and there are plenty of great little bits throughout the episode, such as Noel fainting and the wonderful scene in Frasier's apartment where he tries to get the on-air talent to support the support staff including Gil's catty remarks about Daphne's cooking, I found this to be an episode less than the sum of it's parts. The fact that Frasier and Kate get together is not exactly that much of a surprise (the episode title gives it away) but even so, the script doesn't contain nearly enough big laughs leaving a memorable, above average episode.

I've said before that one of "Frasier"'s greatest strengths is the
wide variety of episode types it can get away with. While I agree
that the amount of type spent with KACL means we don't get
much great humour from the rest of the main cast, I'd say it's only
fair that we spend some time with Frasier's co-workers. I adore
the dinner gathering in Frasier's apartment, and it's very
interesting to see the growing divide between 'talent' and
support staff. Plus, I enjoy any time when the show's disparate
characters get to interact. While this may not be a classic, I for
one greatly enjoyed the continuation of the radio story. Frasier
and Kate falling into each others' arms was, of course, inevitable,
but so were the hook-ups in all the great screwball comedies.

I don't really have much to say in this episode, as it's a
continuation of the themes and plots that have developed thus
far in season 3. But another good sign that "Frasier" is willing to
explore various aspects of its world, and create plots and
situations that will resonate for more than just the existing
episode. Good fun.
