Favourite Disney / Pixar film - thread 2

Postby Dorset Girl » Fri Jul 18, 2008 6:03 pm

There was a thread about this last year, but I was wondering if WALL-E and Ratatouille would change the way people vote? Also, I don't think Monsters Inc. was included in the first one. So this is Disney / Pixar thread Mark II, hope that's all right. :)

I was waiting until I'd finished Ratatouille before voting. Although it was really good, it still doesn't top TS2 for me - sorry Paul! :)

Ratatouille for me. Truly special little film.

Oh well, at least you liked it. :D Toy Story 2 is a very good film - I think it's much better than the first, which to me, isn't that great, aside from the nostalgia factor.

My vote goes to WALL-E, though Ratatouille is a close second. Then Finding Nemo, The Incredibles, Monsters Inc., Toy Story 2, Toy Story, Cars, and A Bug's Life.

I still haven't watched 'A Bug's Life' - that's next on my 'watch' list. :)

It's a good film, though it feels very 'amateur', to be honest - and I'd say the same of Toy Story. Pixar really hit their stride with TS2, in my opinion.

I voted for TS2. I haven't seen Ratatouille, The Incredibles, Monsters Inc, Cars, A Bug's Life or WALL-E.

Toy Story amateur? Completely disagree.

I just find the story-telling and art direction very stale and bland. I know it's not a popular opinion. In fact, I'm convinced that people only say Toy Story is Pixar's best because they remember it fondly from their childhood. Don't get me wrong though, I still like it, and I'd take it over Cars and A Bug's Life.

I think it's aged really well, though I do know a few people who'd be inclined to agree with you. I think the toys are characterised really well, Sid makes a great villain and, yes, it does have enormous sentimental value. I also think it set a very high standard for animation to meet.

That can't be the case for me, because I didn't see any Pixar movies until 2002, when I was 24!

Eh? No, really! I didn't. I remember because we bought a new DVD / video recorder just after we moved into our new house and Toy Story was one of the first DVDs we bought - that's the absolute truth! Even if I'd seen it when it was first released, I'd have been 18 anyway.

 Well, I haven't really grown up yet, if that helps? I still read kid's books, watch kid's TV, and I even eat Bob the Builder pasta shapes on occasion. ;)

Toy Story 2

I put some ranking down the other day. I'm not watching Rata'touille as if my dad saw it with his mistress and they both liked it, I'm not bothering.

I'm irrational in that way.

Cars, I heard nothing good or very little good about. Some do like it but I'm not too keen from what I have seen.

I'm kinda irrational in that way, also.

But Toy Story and its sequel I do enjoy, the latter probably more-so. Can't say I'll bother about WALL-E and won't Monsters Inc.

I'm much more of a Herbie person I fear. :D

DISCLAIMER: This post isn't meant to be about me criticising other films, it's just about why I like Toy Story more than I like the others. So don't yell at me anyone!

The thing I like about Toy Story, and especially TS2, is that there are a lot of characters that you 'get to know' very well. They all have distinct personalities. There's Woody and Buzz of course, but also Hamm, who knows everything, Rex, who wants to be scary but is just scared, Mr Potatohead who was desperate for Mrs Potatohead and now she's here he just gets nagged, Slinky, who's very practical and good natured, RC who can't talk but nevertheless has an obvious personality, the aliens who are looking for leadership, Bo Peep who's a bit of a hussy really ;) ... then there's Bullseye, Zurg, Jessie, Stinky Pete... the list goes on and on! Although Woody and Buzz are the main characters, the others appear frequently and are an important part of the story. All of the characters are likeable apart from the two 'baddies' - Zurg and Stinky Pete - and even Zurg turns out to have a softer side!

None of the other Disney / Pixar movies that I've seen have that to the same extent. Monsters Inc. comes the closest IMHO - there are about six major characters that appear throughout the movie, and they're all well developed.

But Nemo - we have Nemo, Dory, Nemo's father, then other characters who appear just in certain sections of the film. This is going to incur the wrath of a few people (*gets ready to hide!*) but Dory in my opinion, although funny, is quite a one-dimensional character.

I'm certainly not saying that there has to be a focus on lots of characters to make it good - WALL-E proves that - but for me, that's one of the major things that appeals about TS 1 and 2. The way that we learn about each character and how they interact with one another.

Ratatouille is stunning and I've yet to see Wall.E, but my personal favourite is The Incredibles. Absolutely love that film. Just a sucker for superhero films I guess and despite being animated, it's one of the best, easily better than most of its live-action rivals.

I think I owe The Incredibles a re-watch - it was ages ago that I first saw it, and maybe I wasn't paying much attention or something, because I can't even remember the storyline!
