Best Blackadder Series?

I got the idea for this from the Red Dwarf poll. Just vote for your favourite season of Blackadder.

'Goes Fourth' for me, I think, although 2-4 are all amongst some of the best comedy ever produced really.

I picked S4 because it has probably my favourite episode 'Corporal Punishment' ('THE FLANDERS PIGEON MURDERER!') and a finale that puts 'Goodnight Seattle' firmly in the shade.

Thinking about it, I actually think each series was better than the previous one, which is very rare indeed.

Just a shame that crappy 'Back and Forth' special was made.

'Goes Forth' for me too, especially the very last episode. However, my favourite quote is from 'The Third':

Blackadder: "We're more stuck than the time when Sticky the stick insect got stuck to a sticky bun!"

Blackadder II for me. Just fantastic in every way. Just ahead of Blackadder Goes Forth.

S3 for me. Hugh Laurie as Prince Regent was perfect.

"We hail Prince George, we hail Prince George"

"We hate Prince George, we hate Prince George."
Frasier: What do you do when the romance goes out of a relationship?
Roz: I get dressed and go home.

'Forth' for me. Blackadder was a rare show that got better with each series and quit at the very top. We all know Back and Forth didn't happen, don't we?

The specials Tha Cavalier Years and Blackadder's Christmas Carol were superb also.

What is this 'Back and Forth' you speak of?

Never really been too keen on them for some reason.

I loved them. I see them as an extension of the third series, probably due to the fact they used the same set for TCY, and BCC contained a scene with the Prince Regent. It was great to have two new episodes in the year between the third and fourth series, I remember being dead excited when they aired!

'Goes Forth' for me as well. It's perfect - I love the setting, for one thing, but it's also probably the outright funniest of the lot.

I liked parts of 'Christmas Carol' - such as the 'past' segment with Queen Elisabeth, Nursie and Percy and the present segment with Prince George. Nothing else really worked for me though, particularly that weird future scene.

'Cavalier Years' isn't too bad though, actually. I've not seen it in years, so maybe I've underrated it?

What's everyone's favourite ep from each series?

For me:
Blackadder II - Beer
Blackadder The Third - Ink and Incapability
Blackadder Goes Forth - Corporal Punishment (and the last episode too)

Have you not seen the first series, or did you just think they were all joint bottom?

I know you assured me the second half of the first series was very good, but I've still not bothered to take a look...

It's great! I can't believe you haven't seen the S1 finale yet, it's a very funny ep. I have a feeling you'd enjoy Witchsmeller Persuivant more though - Blackadder goes on trial accused of witchcraft and it has many of the sames elements of hilarious injustice as Corporal Punishment - your favourite ep.

I shall brew myself a cup of tea and watch it this very hour then... :)

I just watched that 'Witchsmeller' episode. Sorry BN, but I thought it was pretty awful. Just, not funny. Rowan Atkinson's squeaky voice is annoying, and Blackadder is nothing without his sharp wit and acid tongue, and that was definitely missing her. Plus, Balderick isn't half as stupid as he became in later series, and therefore not half as funny either. Couple of funny lines, but a far cry away from 11-IV for me.

Going to cleanse myself and watch some vintage Blackadder The Third now. :)

Aww, I can't believe you've got the final ep sitting there and won't watch it! Ah well, I understand what you're saying, the characterizations improved markedly from S2 onwards and that's something Rowan Atkinson himself has commented upon. I'm able to get past that, but I can see why you're not so keen.

Maybe I'll stick it on the next time I'm bored and drunk. :P

Would you still say that S1 was the weakest Blackadder series? Would you rate that 'Witchsmeller' episode up there with some of the greats?

I'd definitely say S1 is the weakest, but yeah, I'd place the last 2 eps of S1 above many other Blackadder episodes from later and better series.

Could I ask which episodes you'd place them above? I don't like 'Chains' from Blackadder II, otherwise I think the 'classic' series were very consistent.
